I attended an all-male, private Catholic high school back in the 70's. The school
had a "Dean of Discipline" named Father Justin, and he was a very large person.
Pity the poor soul sent to his office, as his swatting weapon of choice was a sawed-off
oar that had 1" holes drilled through the paddle area. That thing could raise welts in
a heartbeat.......

And no, I never earned a swat...thankfully.

I got the strap and cane numerous times at school. 😄
One funny story. At primary school, year 6, two from our school were chosen to go on a school camp. I was one of them. Years later when im about 30 my mother said "I was so proud of you being one of those boys chosen out of the whole school to go on that camp when you were in primary school".
I thought she knew! It wasn't reward it was we were the two that got into trouble all the time, the camp was mainly for private school kids, upper class. We were public.
The idea was that schools would pick out a couple of kids they thought needed some better examples and send them along with the private posh kids to a camp and learn some better ways. So there was about 8 separate dorm type buildings for the posh kids, about 15 kids in each and 1 for us ratbags. 😄
It was hilarious. First day several of the stuck up private school kids came to our dorm to make fun of us. One of the ones in ours was a big chubby chinese kid. When they started making fun calling us names he yelled and ran at the main one and bodily squashed him into the wall. He fell over winded then got up and ran away, they never hassled us again. 😂 We all had a ball there.
At 30 when I told my mother she burst out laughing saying "I thought you were a good boy!?" 😄
I think I answered along the lines of "yeah, nah, not all the time".

The paddle or the bookshelf? 🤔
I Never Made a weapon to beat children, , OR ever Got Beat with one.

That's Probably Why I'm not actually a Violent Person in Person.
Only in my mind Online occasionally :laughing9:

I see the humor and irony in this, but on the other hand, what kind of a school lets the students assault their guests speakers? For that matter, what kind of school has teenagers setting their own rules with no punishment? Perhaps that worked better in 1948 than it would today? Maybe this is part of what inspired William Golding to write "Lord of the Flies" a few years later.
