AMAZING...INCREDIBLE...8 REALE!!!!! (New Pic Added 12 Nov 06)

I found this about 2 hours ago at a homestead which has been around for over 300 years. In the same yard I also found a 1799 Britannia! I thought I had found the pinacle with the 1799 Britannia but 20 minutes later I found this...

It was only 4 inches down...I hit it with the shovel as seen in the pic. 1798 8 Reale!!! I almost fainted! I am still giddy with excitement!!!

I was studying the Reale last night and noticed the edging. Even that is near pristine! I would almost suspect that this coin was in circulation for a very short period prior to being lost. I am going to pick up an air tight holder this week and lock it away to keep my grubby fingers off it.

Nope...not even close. The property is probably 5 acres and we only scanned the area for an hour. There is a hedgerow down one side of the front lawn and that is where I found the Reale, the 1799 Britannia and a blank copper. We are going back there this week to spend the day!

The closest I have come to one of these was a contempory fake.

VERY NICE FIND.

If your like me your be beating yourself up for weeks about damaging it. Thats why I use a big spade & dig 12" back from where I think it is. Haven't hit anything since.

Too bad you hit it but at least you got it. I don't let these mishaps bug me because the recovery process is going to cause this many times.

I've owned a few 8's and they are big. I'd just love to dig one like yours.

One awesome coin Romeo.

That one would have shook the hands while holding it. I'd love to find just one reale. My cellar holes give up the large cents and colonial coins but no early silver or reales.

It will happen at one point or another. To find a 8 reale though is incredible. That coin had to be worth a good bit at that time. You could probably buy a acre of land with one of those.

I bet it was missed. They are very large. So you would think it was lost in a manner were someone couldn't retrace were they lost it.
