Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Mass. coat button

I searched some sort of campsite in the woods yesterday. My best find was this Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts (AHAC) coat button, which is apparently from the Civil War era. The 1638 commemorates the year the Company was chartered. According to the AHAC website, it is “the oldest chartered military organization in the western hemisphere.” The Company was formed as a volunteer militia company “that would train on a regular basis to increase the readiness and military skills of its members.” Today, the Company is largely ceremonial. My other decent find was this ring. It is stamped sterling, though I suspect the gemstone is artificial. I am guessing 1940s 🤔. Good luck and happy hunting!

Thanks! The soil was sandy, which I think may have helped. The back is somewhat corroded, though I may be able to clean it up a bit.

Thanks! I was hoping it was older when I saw the 1638, but could tell it was a later period button right away based on its construction. Civil War era is cool though, especially since I did not think the site I was searching was very old. Thanks again.

You don't see those come up very often. In fact it it the first one I have seen posted I have an earlier one piece version (non dug) with the standing Indian in my collection.

Thanks, Silvermonkey. We are blessed with a beautiful flag and a majestic national bird, so I like to incorporate them when I can. By the way, I saw a bald eagle a couple days ago in my area. It’s nice that they are starting to appear more frequently in Massachusetts. Maybe you have been lucky enough to spot one recently too?

Thanks! I don’t think mine is a rare button, but I too don’t recall seeing one posted here before. I think I prefer the earlier ones with the Indian, but I take what I can get😁..
