Civilman1 and I hit a section near Antietam that I had never been to before. Civilman got 4 bullets from the area last week. My Whites 6000 was down for the count so I used my Tesoro and dug EVERY hit. I came away with my first honest to goodness civil war bullet, but it wasn't what I expected. The bullet was a chewed bullet wit definite human teeth marks all over it. You can see the opening of the bullet was pinched shut.

After a 5+ hour hunt, we decided to go over to our Williamsport site. There I got another first. My very first artillery fragment. What a rush to see that big ole piece of iron come out of the dirt. First thing I did, once I realized I wasn't seeing things, was look for civilman to share the excitement. Then we opened a couple of cold ones and celebrated a little before hitting it again.

Thanks for providing us with that link haboo. I'm gonna try it.

Tymcmurray, those are some great finds. I really like how that piece cleaned up. Is the link haboo provided similar to your set up? Also, with all the fuss about your bullet, I'm interested in what your dentist says.
I think it's a cool find no matter what the heck chewed it.

It would be interesting if you found one that a soldier chewed.

It's also interesting to think about some hog, whether feral or not,(or some other animal but more interesting to think it a hog) eating on some rotting corpse and happens by the bullet. It would be like us eating a hamburger and finding a piece of bone. LOL!!! Great Visual!!! ;D

But just think, if it was chewed by a hog, whether out of a corpse or just out of the ground, it was probably swallowed. You know what that means, it came out it's butt. ;)LOL!!! And you're touching it!!!! :o

I just thought I'd try and add some laughter to this post.

Thanks again for sharing these great finds you got,
Ed

I don't think it's "cool" to think of a hog eating on "some rotting corpse"...not cool at all!

I apologise romeo-1. Sorry to offend you. I should have known from reading some of the replies on this post that there's a lot of up tight people in the MD world that can't take a joke or for one brief moment not be so freakin' serious. If you'd seen(and heck, you may have, what do I know)some of the dead folks I have, you wouldn't be so serious either. Life is to short not to have a sense of humor even if it seems to be a little morbid sometimes but just for you and to make YOU and who ever else is offended happy, I changed the word cool to interesting. Again, I apologise if I offended anyone. But if your freakin' dead, what the hell does it matter if it's a hog or a bunch of worms and bugs eating you. Lighten up people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL...relax man...your sense of humour and mine are different, something I am thankfull for. No need to blow a gasket. Instead of stealing this post with our "rants" if you want to continue please do so through PM.

Back on topic...this is still a great find and a nice job on restoring that fragment!

Ed I bet you would be in hog heaven to find that one.

....maybe not really where you would want to go. ;D

A nice job on the electrolysis!
I am going to try this set up when I get off work tonight on a knife I found and let it sit and see what I have when I get up in the morning.
Thanks for the link Ty!!

Funny Iron Patch ;D

Re: Antietam gives up a tasty treat UPDATED cannonball photo

I've always meant to set up an electrolysis set up but have never gotten around to it. I have a huge amount of iron to practice on!

Re: Antietam gives up a tasty treat UPDATED cannonball photo

I've done it, very easy, decent results too.

Question ??? If you have something thats a little more delicate that a cannon ball but not as delicate as a coin, would it be alright to wire brush it? Example:If it were a piece of iron or steel the had letters stamped on it.

I think I would use electrolysis on all iron but adjust the voltage and time depending on the item. I do not wire brush anything nor do I see a need for it.

My great great great grandfather was in the US Civil War, he used to chew on cannonballs. He would catch them in flight and take a big ole' bite outta them.

He was the ornriest cuss you ever could meet.

Of course, he fought to save the Union.

Well my Ancestors fought for RIGHTEOUSNESS and STATES RIGHTS. THEY fought for the Confederacy...Look at the total tally, YES we lost....but the final tally of killed was nearly TWICE the number of Yankees to Southerners=aprox. 400,000 to just 200,000 Southerners. WITH LESS MATERIAL, WITH LESS CANNONS, WITH LESS GUNS, WITH LESS AMMUNITION, WITH LESS FOOD, WITH LESS CLOTHING, WITH NO SHOES, BUT WITH MORE DETERMINATION, WITH MORE HEART, WITH MORE SOUL, WE managed to take out TWICE the number of Yankees, than they took out OF US! ;) ;) ;)

Let's chew on that idea for awhile. ;D

Re: Antietam gives up a tasty treat UPDATED cannonball photo

I took the bullet to my dentist and he thinks they are human teeth marks, but to make sure, he offered to keep the bullet and do a reverse impression to get a positive image of the actual teeth. When he gets it done, he will give them to me so that I can post the photos of them. He got all into it, and even came up with the argument that 1) why would an animal chew on a bullet that long if it wasn't food, and 2) If an animal did chew them, there would be pieces missing when the actually tasted the bullet. That why I like him, he's very logical.
