Long time lurker here. You guys are amazing with your id's! I have learned tons reading this site over the years. I found these two items many years ago at an old home site here in western Maryland. Detecting finds start out in the very early 1700's in this area. I've shown them to many diggers and posted them on a forum or two, and no one has any idea what they are for sure. Any of you have a clue as to what they might be? Thanks...Beau

I wonder if the different sizes are just poor castings?
Not different castings, differerent molds. They were made by more than one factory/person back them.

For instance the one with the ball is smaller than the one with the point.
length (top to opposite ball) width (across holes) mass
Ball = 55.8mm 37.3mm 33.16 gram
point= 60.7mm 40.7mm 37.26 gram
Great info! Any confirmation pics? I'm completely convinced this is a posy holder at this stage.
Well kyphote not yet, I have been looking on quite a few metal detector sites and have not seen one (a simple one made from tin). Also looked for such things as tin posy holder, but still only come up with silver or gold. I'm pretty darn sure that our determination is good, maybe I have to send the photo to a museum or something to get it confirmed.

Great, keep at it. And to clarify, I sent the msg (Kyphote) not BCH. Not sure he's as definite as me and don't want to put words in his mouth. ;D

;D I meant that because there are 2 different sizes within the same item, that it may just be a poor casting...or 2 different sizes on purpose? :dontknow:

Well, as everyone "nose" if you are right handed, your right hand and fingers are larger than your left. I wonder if the same is true with nostrils? Here's another possible weird use, suspend with twine from head to just where it would hang under the nose, for when you have runny sinuses, to catch the drips, sure beats using your shirt sleeves :tongue3:......NGE

This has nothing to do with nose drips, but only smell.

(Also, did you notice that your name was too long, there is a maximum of letters for a name.)

Yes, I think the latter. Don't know why yet though, will ask the experts (if I can get in contact with them).

NGE -- I like your long name. As for nostril discrepancy, I wondered this myself and discovered mine are identical in diameter when measured with a caliper two days ago. I recommend everyone on this forum measure their nostrils.

You guys need to measure spread (distance between) as well as diameter.

If your name is too long it does not display correctly on the left side of the messages..... I don't think that was your intention.

Maybe by you, but not by me. You could see something else than we do because it is displayed out of your profile. When I scroll to the right or left I do not see anything at all, no name. If you do see your name then it does not mean that we do. Or maybe its only with me, the moderator said that the name was too long.

What about the rest of you guys, do you see the complete name?

Hmm, so to see you are getting more on your screen than I am. I am not seeing a name at all, only the slider......

Something is wrong someplace.

And I see two other icons below the avatar but they don't work.

Well, if you have a good memory, you can remember first letter of name b4 you scroll, ( when the "N" disappears), and at the very end you will see the last letter "G". BTW, my name in here used to be Notgittinenny, reffering to when I first signed up in T-Net., I joined because of bad knees, that year, I wasn't getting any coins. I have been married for 32 years and there is no problem in that dept. :laughing7: Oh but the beasties in here had fun with it, and only one was offended (I didn't know how to use ignore yet). So, to not create tidal waves I changed it to what you (partially) see now. And I would either check "My preferences (yours) and see what you may have blocked or enabled in the forums....My knees are not hurting so much now, so when I do get out to hunt, I am " Nowgittineverything "

I understand nowgittineverything, good story. There has to be something wrong with my profile that is correct, because others see it good (even if they have to scroll). Good to see that you are still getting out and searching, its a great hobby and outside is always good.

That's what I would like to see, but I see nothing, even if I scroll. Will look at my profile and if nothing is crazy there go to the moderator.
