I think that hole is for a screw and its the top off a flag holder. A Whiffletree has a loop on the end.

Gypsy,

Would a flag holder be made of copper instead of brass? If that's a screw hole it could be a tip for any number of things.

First...can't believe my humble self pointed out something to the most knowledgeable Gypsy ::)

Keep in mind that copper is a soft metal and probably wouldn't hold up on a walking stick. I was going to suggest that myself until I remembered that. This is turning into a challenge!

This thing is pretty heavy on the ball end, as in solid.
I don't have a scale to weigh it, but if I had to guess it's around a 1/3 pound.

The end doesn't appear to be flattened or abused.

I'm cleaning it now, and will add another picture when finished.

Tip to a walking stick? Has a hole for a screw to retain it. Could be a tip to protect a wood part or leg for anything from a foot stool or a milking stool to a small flag pole or a buggywhip handle.

Kas, what did you clean it with? I have a copper thingy that I cannot seem to get anywhere on. No matter what I do, it always looks like your "before" pics. Thanks - Noodle

Could it be something that went on the bottom of the leg of a table to finish it off and maybe protect it from scratching the floor?

Electrolysis.

This is the site I used to make mine. Works great. Wouldn't suggest using it on valueable copper coins. Cleans silver fine.
