I figured the button may be older because every other one ive seen was a 2 piece...this one is a one piece....It was found next to a foundation of a home that burned in 1868. I had to walk 2 miles into the woods for this sucker...grrr...haha

I understand... one piece or two, this design was first used in 1902... now, is there a back mark or any other feature that might help determine the button's age?

Jim's right about the button, of course: U.S. Army "Great Seal" general service button, c. 1902-present.

The backmark is probably "D. EVANS & CO.," a firm which operated for nearly a century, from about 1848 to 1945.

LOL... Um, hello PBK! I was about to say:

Back Mark: "D. EVANS & CO." 1848-1945

So if this is the back mark, yours is from 1902-1945.

Still a great find!
