My husband found this buckle from the civil war period while metal detecting. We are looking for anyone who might have some information about this type of buckle? Thanks in advance!

This will be my last experiment along these lines. I just thought it might be fun and educational to see some examples of what goes on regarding e-bay Civil War items.

If you read the detailed description on the last buckle that sold for $364.00, you will recall that it was missing the wreath. "Apparently" on the original buckles the wreath was attached seperately during the initial production. Whereas on the reproductions the wreath is cast as part of the buckle itself. Okay, so "maybe" the last one was original. But are we 100% sure? I'm not! Counterfeiters already know this stuff. I just learned it today.

But what about this next one? The seller doesn't say anything one way or the other about it's authenticity. But surely he is hoping someone believes it is. Why else would he place the opening bid at $324.99? And yet, there is not a single bid on it yet, and it closes tomorrow. But does the zero bids mean it's a fake? Answer: "I don't know either."

Compare the two below and see what you think. One is the "maybe" original that sold earlier today. The other one is a "probably not original" that closes tomorow. Personally, I wouldn't bid on either one, even if the price was only $50.00 ... But then, that's just my opinion.

Closes tomorrow at appx. 5:PM Eastern time. Opening bid @ $324.99 Real or Fake? :dontknow:

I initially was suspect of the last one but looking at figure 623 in O'donnels book it is near exact. The missing wing tip is suspect, but possible. As I said unless its from period of specialty I would risk it.PS the wreath on this buckle is also applied....that is for sure no way to tell,as they were originally both ways and are reproed both ways

I realize this is an old thread that hasn't been replied to since October 30, 2011, but I wanted to share the following that I found on the internet today while looking for something else. Be sure to click on the other pictures on the link that show the back of the buckle. Scroll to item 14BBL. If these two buckles are in any way related, it would date them circa 1898.
