So do any of you believe it's a calendar? The two half are like a mirror image of itself. With a slight difference sort of like the active and passive. Good or evil. I believe it's old but not made by them. I have a hunch maybe who made it. I've seen this typekm in other cultures art. Like we discussed before in some of your earlier post. My theory of course.

The one being shown by JTW has bearded men at the bottom. It just makes me think of the Jesuit and Spanish that had invaded them. I could be way off. This is what I think it should look like

those figures at the bottom my be them. The Aztec and Mayan are not my field of study. Although I see their influence used in the Jesuit's work. Then again the Mayan and Aztec may have been in my part of the country. Not trying to discredit just paying attention to the details

Hey Bwb, looked at the "men" (six legs and tail) at the bottom and noticed TWO different beards on jtw1313 pic. The one on the right looks Sumerian.

Possibly, if you didn't look good you would think he could have glasses on. On the one I show those are animals at the bottom. The right one is a bird maybe. Like I said the.Mayan and Aztecs are not my expertise. But as far as the Sumerian that's possible. I believe there were many travelers here before the Spanish. The Phoenician are another possibility along with any of the lost tribes of Isreal. There is a lot we don't know about this country. There is plenty of discoveries yet to be announced.

Depending on the interpretation they could be beards, chin straps from the helmets or side shields. It's in chiseled and worn basalt, not colorized.

It's a tourist piece. I've vacationed in Mexico each summer for nearly 30 years and I see these in all the markets for @ $25 US.

It looks like machine embroidery to me.

BTW the 'beards' on the guys at the bottom are actually the side pieces of their helmets. Aztec/Mayan men, like Native Americans and many Asian men, don't have that much facial hair.

What do you think about JTW'S?

I've never been to Mexico City so I don't know what the museum shop or street vendors offer - the original is 12 feet in diameter and I assume this painting is smaller. If you search you will find that subject painted on leather. It's kind of a famous object in Mexico.

Kinda cool, and probably something reproduced for the tourist trade. It's a famous piece in Mexico. I believe the same image is depicted on the back of the Mexican 20 peso gold coin. The central figure is Tonatiuh, and he's holding two hearts in his hands. My younger grandson is named Tonatiuh, the Aztec Sun God, but he can't melt away the snow up here. Quetzalcoatl was sometimes depicted as a bearded man, but I don't think there's any bearded men in your pic. My stepson Quetzal also has a slight beard. (Just not a whole lot of Jose's and Maria's in my family, as the younger generation are into those Nauhuatl names.)
