anyone have experience with the older keene pumps?

Ok here's a little more info on the identity of my pump. It is yellow, on it are the words "keene eng co. Northridge CA"
The intake is 2 1/2"
The output also looks to be 2 1/2"

I'm stumped, but need to be certain of the model before I can order new seals for it.

I reread your posts a couple a times and 1 thing stands out. The pump was shipped with the outer impeller housing removed??? If old school pump it used a thick paper seal at the pump-only newer ones used the rubber ring black buna style. On ol'school there was a spacer also on the shaft to keep the impeller in place and many different lengths. If your using(mixing)old/new the O rubber ring does NOT index the outer housing far enough from the impeller hense you run a little-then die as impeller binds up as WAY too close. I could fix in a few minutes with a dial indexing slide micrometer but......put back together, pull starter rope--does the impeller turn?then add water does the seal on the shaft leak water?? if no leaks not the problem. Does the pump outer housing have a hose bib cast into the housing to attach a garden hose to???John

John most of your reply this time kinda confused me, I just had a hard time following, but then again a lot of this is confusing to me as I really don't know what I'm doing.
But to answer your last question, yes my pump had a place to attach a garden hose to the housing.
I actually have a little time this afternoon as long as the rain holds out, I'm going to go home and tear it apart and see if I can't answer a few questions. I'll let you all know what I find.

Ok, well I've gotten to work on it some. Based on what Hoser John said it don't look like it's the seal. I filled the pump with water, and covered the intake hole to see if it was leaking anywhere and it's not leaking.

It does have the big rubber o ring it looks to be in good shape, but a little flattened so I replaced it. I also cleaned the old silicone residue off it, and put some gasket former on the housing before I put it back together.

I'm back to thinking that I was just sucking air somewhere. Either around the housing from it not being put back on properly, or that intake hose. I'm not real thrilled with the intake hose either way, and it's been suspect #1 the whole time. I'm going to try to rig something up with it and go give it a try again here this evening. A few extra hose clamps and some water seal tape should eliminate and chance of that hose leaking air.

I'll post results later tonight.

Unfortunately I never got to the creek to try it last night, so I'm still not sure if I got it figured out or not. I'll check tomorrow.

I live in Winchester, VA if there are any locals that can help.

I live in Winchester, VA.

Unfortunately I didn't get to the creek to test it last night, so I'm still not sure if it's just the intake hose, or if it's something else. If it's not the hose then I'm lost, and I'm either going to have to take it to a professional, or just buy a new pump all together.
I want to go dredging for 3 days starting Monday so I'm running out of time.

If your not sure of what you are doing take the unit to any small engine shop they can easily replace the seal for you. That would be the safest way to keep from damaging the housing or the shaft or even the impeller. If I recall the P180 has a pressedin seal behind the impeller and may need a machine press to safely install your new seal and when you order the new seal ordr a couple as they are terrible about going out without any warning.
