Apush: Cameo Clad Question

I have always gotten a few clad cameos here and there, but as of late, I seem to getting a bit more than my own fair share. Are there really any worth keeping? I have at least 3 complete sets from 1971-2009. I am saving those for each of my 3 kids. But now I have, for example, 8-1974S. Course some are in better shape than others.

Chunk them back?

If they are exceptional, then keep them. Being that you can find proof sets still in the Mint's packaging for slightly over face of the set, than I wouldn't bother. If you were trying to assemble a set pulled from circulation for the challenge, then you did well.

I personally don't know of a market for impaired proofs. I do remember some poster quite awhile back that said his local coin shop paid $0.80 each for them (or gave him that much credit in trade - don't remember which.) At any rate, I think thats pretty rare. As DD said, its not hard to find clad proof sets for cheap prices. Why would anyone want to pay a premium for an impaired proof when they can get the whole set, still sealed from the mint, for a pretty small premium?

You might check around and see what your local shops would do. If they do not want them, then unless you want to collect them, they probably aren't worth keeping - especially if you're wanting some sort of "profit" from them.

To reiterate, not all collecting has to have a profit motive. Sometimes you collect for the challenge. Understanding grading standards, I've attempted to assemble grading sets of a particular year from circulation. Not that hard for the middle grades, but it is really hard to find a mint state 72 or a 72 that is only good. When I'm done, I'll dump them again. I've also attempted to collect an impaired proof set. Still trying, but I don't keep multiples of the same year; only the best example. I realize there won't be a market for the set, but it is for the challenge to complete the set from circulation.

I'd hold onto the real nice ones, even if you have multiple same dates. They
are an "S" mint mark.

I agree completely. People should collect whatever they want to collect. Not everything has to be "for profit." I am also attempting to put together a complete set of JFK's, including the proofs, just for my personal collection.

However, I would not pay a premium for any of the proofs to complete that collection. I wouldn't even pay face value. Its just more of a personal challenge to me. Either I "find" them on my own, or the set doesn't get completed.

In my opinion the only ones worth anything are really the ones we hunt, (SILVER) Any clad proof or clad coin you "find" will most likely have scratches and marks on it making it worth nothing but face value.

I have found a lot this year as well. And many of them in pristine condition lately. I keep all of the ones that are really nice. You can trade them with other collectors for coins you need. Some coin shops will pay a buck or two for them also. A lot of the clad proofs are listed at over $10 in MS condition in my book, so you can get well over face for them, even if you only get a buck or 2 a piece for them.
