I’d like to share some lesser-known information I discovered while researching Madagascar during the Pirate Round era.
But it is true that they chose Madagascar as their place of retreat. A series of unpublished and printed documents bear witness to their presence on the great African island.
“Long before the discovery of the island by the Portuguese,” says M. de Rauville, Arab pirates knew it and made it the main hiding place for their loot. They called it Dima Margabim. They even continued, up until the early days of the Dutch settlement, to hide the proceeds of their plunder there, in caves located in remote areas. But the arrival of these colonists hindered them.
