Oh, this is perfect timing for a post I was about to make. Last night I was researching government documents and found a state "archaeological report" which sounded like an "environmental" report, regarding a shipwreck site and Indian artifacts also found at the site from the ship salvage team. Nothing more than a few "points" and a bit of broken ceramic.
The first thing of note was the statement that the information contained in the report "was not for the general public". Part of the report was "concerned" that because of the presence of Indian artifacts (which could have fallen off a canoe/logboat, been thrown into the sea, or the result of spearfishing), that the site was possibly a former land site that had become sunken lands and such a site would be valuable for study (because it was sunken lands) (my wording not theirs).
So basically, they wanted to hold up the ship salvage to "preserve" what might have been a former land archaeological site. The state archies did hold up salvage efforts to search for Indian artifacts and take geological samples of the ocean sediments and to conduct mineral testing.
The report was full of all the usual "expert" propaganda and suggested more Federal regulations and protection of sites. (If the state hasn't confiscated enough under the guise of "state parks", "preserves", and "refuges")
(I noticed Disney World wasn't told they were destroying important wetlands, inland wildlife habitats, and delicate "ecosystems" when they drained all the swamps in Orlando...oh and don't they own a resort at Wabasso on former Indian grounds ?). We must consider all the pristine coastlines sold to "developers" even though they were true archaeological sites. There were Indian encampments up and down the St. Lucie River too, but all that land was sold to developers.
Then last night I also read another report...from the archies, and it was full of archie bull too. What was really great about it, the statements in that report, contradicted statements in the other. Can't archies decide which propaganda story lines they are going to stick with ?
Anyway, it was claimed in the first report, that the claims by salvagers that archie data will be lost and artifacts destroyed if not salvaged more quickly was not valid. They claimed that high energy wave action does not "damage" archie sites and artifacts. (Tell that to the ships of the 1715, that high energy wave action doesn't destroy ships. And just how long do archies think wood and metals etc last in the sea ?).
Anyway, it was obviously a report made by an archie who had to "make it look" like he was doing his job to justify his nice state salary.
