Are coil covers necessary??

Some accessory catalogs refer to "coil covers"! Are they necessary & do they impede the strength of the signal?

They don't impede the strength of the signal. Covers protect the coil from abrasions from rocks and plain old dirt from sanding away at the plastic allowing water to get inside. Some seal the gap with silicone sealant to stop black sand from entering the cover. Some coat the coil with epoxy or just apply duct tape to the coil.

Some are careful and take care of there expensive equipment. They hold the coil about 1" above the ground and there coils last forever. Mine is 10 years old and never seen a cover. Covers have a tendency to collect materials that bias the readings. In other words, why bother!

Not all keep it off the ground, hit one rock to hard and you have a gouge or bad scratch at the least and a crack at the worst. I buy a lot of used detectors if the coil is scratched I usually stay away from buying the detector. You have better chance of getting top dollar on resell if coil is in mint unscratched condition.

As fast minerals just keep it cleaned out...

On new hunters I always recommend a coil cover as they are just learning and accidents/mistakes happen..

Your not supposed to practice you golf swing with your detector. Are you really worried about a surface scratch on the bottom of a coil. That's not damage.

Trying to keep all scratches off the coil is like a race car driver trying not to put wear his tires. it comes with the territory. To me it's not the looks of a coil that matter, it's the function of the coil that matters.
