Are coil covers necessary??

Some accessory catalogs refer to "coil covers"!! Are they necessary and/or do they, at all, affect the strength of the signal??:

Yes they are necessary, especially if your hunting land. They do not affect your coil's depth or strength. They protect the sides and bottom of your coil from rocks and the ground.....

No they are not needed. I have never seen one damaged from Normal use. I use Whites coils I don't know if that matters. Coil covers just seem to be more trouble then they are worth. You have to understand, coil covers and there use will get you a whole bunch of opinions.

They do not effect your signal, unless you do what I did once. I bought one a long time ago and it had a foil bar tag on the inside. I thought it was paper at first, so I left it on. You can guess the rest.

Yes use them! It protects your coil from wear, it is cheaper to buy a $20 coil cover than a $100-$200 coil.....

yes I have seen coils with the bottoms worn off from constant scrubbing of the coil on the ground.
and scrubbing is necessary for maximum depth on some detectors.

another Plus, resale Value increases when you can show the coil was taken care of.

other upside covers cost a couple dollars to replace
coils can cost a couple hundred

Downside, you need to remember to clean them out occasionally.

Biggest mistake with cover, gluing them fast.
no matter how well you glue them, Dirt, will find a way in.
and if those fines are gold or iron dust, your detector looses depth

IT must be the brand of detector that makes the difference. With my Whites I can search holding the coil 1" above the ground. It will go down about 2' so I don't miss the inch. I have been at it for over 40 years and never used a coil cover, and never replaced a coil. Frank

Not saying your wrong only that not everyone is as careful and many varied terrains, uneven surface many areas with lots of rocks. I can't say you need one and can't say someone else doesn't need one.

The problem is when you find you do need it it is usually too late for your current coil.

Well what do you know. I agree with frank. Must be the cheap coils they use on brand X. I have never ever damaged a coil. I am not to careful with them either.

A coil is not required but not a bad idea if you are "scrubbing" the ground, as mentioned above. Grassy areas will not wear down the outer covering of a coil but arid, sparsely covered ground will wear it down like sand paper. TTC

Just be careful about the brand of bed liner you use as some have metallic particles in them. Believe I read a long thread somewhere on this forum about coil covers and sprays. A few use marine epoxy. Guess it all depends on how you vieew the resale value, etc.
