That testimony sure supports my understanding of the settling of the west. It wasn’t black and white like society makes it out to be today. Unforgivable atrocities were committed by all. I’ll leave it at that.

You know you can choose your friends, but you cannot choose your family. It is the same with your ancestors.
A thing to remember, you are not responsible for the actions of ancestors or descendants of your family lineage. I can guarantee you that somewhere along your family tree, someone in the past was horrible. They were products of their time, and they do not define who you are. It's only your actions and your experiences in your life that make you who you are.
In the game of life hard work and a little luck in opportunities can go a long way. Not everyone has opportunities or the drive to change things. It is the same with ancestors; you get the good, the bad, and the ugly. The successes and failures. Even in my living family connections today. I have cousins I would not piss on if they were on fire. I have nieces and nephews, both successful and total failures. I have both ends of extremes, one nephew involved in Drone development for the military, and a niece breaking bad, spending her life in jail.
Being related to someone famous or infamous is not a reflection on who you are. Each one of us is special and unique, and how you carry yourself here and now in life you lead is what you will be remembered for.

My great aunt was Elizabeth Custers cousin. She loved to tell the story when she went to her house and she was wearing the most beautiful dress she had ever seen. I wish I would have talked to her more about her but I was young and didn't care much about pretty dresses then, still don't.

Got this not long ago from Family Search listing some people that I am related too. Mostly surprising, but I knew of some already from researching my family tree through them and Ancestry.com. If your ancestors came to the "new world" early on they found he gene pool quite shallow and full of second sons who were not destined to inherit wealth and titles and therefore came across the big pond looking to find their fortunes here. Or they could have been serving on one of the early ships to arrive. Escaping religious persecution was another motivating factor. I've found quite a few other notable Americans not mentioned here. Not bragging, I had no hand in it. Some just by marriages. These are apparently supposed to be direct connections.FamilySearch.org
