Arrowheads

Hi. I'm new to the arrowhead/American Indian artifacts hunting. I'm currently in the Carbondale, IL area and was just wondering if anyone knew of a good place to start my journey. My plan is to start this weekend; I just don't know where to go or what to look for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

welcome aboard... any plowed fields near creeks, streams, and rivers should be a great start for you. look through the posts on this forum to start learning what is and what isnt an artifact so you can identify what you find. remember to always get permission on private property, and if you are not sure what it is you have found, take it home anyways. good luck!

Since you are new to this your first challenge is going to be acquiring permission to hunt. As far as tools goes a good pair of comfortable boots, a walking stick to flip interesting rocks over without bending, great eyesight, and a boat load of patience.

So how do I go about figuring out who owns a field or rural property?

Here is a link for your states GIS mapping. http://www.gispilot.com/States/Illinois.html Look for your county or the county that you want to hunt in. When you locate the property on the GIS map click "identify" on the parcel and it will tell you the name of the owner and parcel number etc. You can then either call your county assessor and ask for the contact info by parcel number or try and find the owners phone number in one of the many search engines online.

you have alot of state owned ground down there so be very careful about hunting on state land. stop any conservation officer and im sure they can direct you in the right directions. welcome aboard and just walk slow and check all runoffs from creeks and washout areas in farm fields. if you start seeing flint chips grid out a pattern and walk slow. good luck. !!!!!!!!!
