Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

At lunch today, I spent most of my time putting "warning" signs on two deer tree stands I spotted out in the farm woods. Since it's bow season, and I don't feel like getting shot at while detecting, I put signs on the stands to let them know I am out there too. I feel a bit better now. I detected quickly around a large oak and mound of dirt and boulders out in the woods. There are more signals in that area, but I ran out of time. I dug up these three pieces in about a 20' radius. I also dug an old drawknife too, but it was too long for my pouch. I'll retrieve it later. At least it's a sign of activity in this area.
Is the rounded piece part of a cannonball? (I can dream can't I? ;D )
Thanks for looking,
MM

Yes INDEED.. A piece of a 6lb Bormann!!!!! You have FOUND one. I have lots of these. This was a 6lber probably with case shot and a Bormann fuse. Good going

Thanks Josh.
Ya-hooooo!
I'm trying to find enough evidence to show troops moved through this property. I have a good feeling they did by all the bullets, buttons, buckles, lock pieces, etc. I've found so far.
The old road they used during the CW is very close to this property.

Montana Jim,
I'm doing this for you buddy. ;D

I thought it may be, but didn't want to look like a complete idiot posting it. :P
I'm going to go back and hit that area hard. I got some very deep signals today, but they were under too many roots.

Good JOb!
Nice piece of schrapnel. Sounds like your farm is similar to my brothers that I have just started scouting. Right on a road that troops traveled to get to a battle about a half a mile away. I too found a cannonball piece(12pd) and several minnies. Still can't figure out what the Texas trinket is that I found.

Keep us posted. Looks like you have a great farm to relic hunt.

Thanks Gary.
I was told these were Union soldiers traveling through on their way up to the Louisburg, NC. area then into Virginia. That may explain the fancier quality buttons and 3-ringer bullets I've found.

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

BTW, I know you said that someone told you that the Yankees moved through there....but my guess is, that this shrapnel was PROBABLY Confederate as the Union Army by this stage in the war 1864-65 for all intents and purposes, no longer used 6 pounders. The Confederacy did though but also in a far smaller amount than in the early days of the War. There is no sure way to tell but it is a pretty good guess that this came from a Confederate artillery battalion firing on the columns of Blue Bellies that were marching through that area. ;)

Josh,
Some great info. I'm starting to wonder if this mound of rocks was purposely stacked by this large oak?

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

Very cool! Should be some other CW goodies waiting for you.

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

Hey Doug,

Congrats on your artillery fragment find. I'd be real interested in finding out what you dig up from some of those deep signals you said were obstructed by tree roots.

Good luck in your quest for more CW relics. Sounds like a fun site......just keep an eye out for those hunters, would ya? :-\

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

MM, they were probably more than likely stacked up purposely. I would have to see a picture but there are a few reasons why they may have done this. How high and wide is it?

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

Doug!!!!!

Yippie!!!! THAT's what I wanna see brother!!

Your other bits are half a snaffle bit (horse's mouth bit) and a horse tack harness buckle... or other related tack

Man I'm freaking phyched for you.. if your in virgin territory... than you'll set! VERY kewl!!! Congrats!!!

I only signed on for one minute and this is the only post I'm responding to... WTG!

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

MM--Look, your piece (TOP) looks just like this piece that I have almost finished cleaning (bottom)! Still, love that you found some 6lber cannon ball shrapnel! It is great when someone else digs those elusive relics that you have dug and are digging. 6lb Bormanns are not an easy find, even on alot of Civil War battlefields, especially of the latter years. You are on a good spot! Keep it to yourself ;)

cool finds and definitely got some horse tack, with half of an old bit nice...Ray

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

Nice Finds, Looks like you found a camp site if your finding buttons. Troops would camp off the main roads they used .I have a lot of the same shrapnel you found , I found them in a confederate camp site were an artillery battle took place..and I don't think a horse bit would just fall out of his mouth and off the rein if the troops were just passing thru. Take your time and dig a bunch of stuff then you will have a better idea.
Good Luck and Good Finds...HH.. 8)

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?

the rock mound might be a shooting spot* the rocks put there to make cover for folks firing might be very worth while to check the area very closely for spent in coming lead that hit the rocks / or dropped bullets from the shooting side who knows --check the rocks see if theres any "impact spots" from incoming fire if so you might line up where the fire was coming to and from leading to other finds by back tracking the line of fire -- it might be a snipers spot or artillery spotters post --- lucky you --- Ivan

Re: Asst'd Farm relics - Cannonball piece?
