On a well hunted battlefield today with my ancient-80s-era nautilus toting buddy and his dad. We found 40 bullets between us, including a picket, a few gardeners and a carved bullet (Probably an unfinished nipple protector - pictured behind my button. We pulled a lot of frags today from 6, 12 and 24 pounders. Ancient-Nautilus-Buddy had us all beat (again) with a knap sack hook, Springfield Butt plate and Eagle Button. Fine day, but nothing terribly exciting. Until . . . The Tejon sang to me from a Confederate Trenchline. Pulled a clod from about 8" down and the signal was out of the hole. Broke the clod in half and that gorgeous green sphere that says "BUTTON!" to us CW guys was poking out of the side. Pulled it out of the clod and saw an Eagle. I'm thinking, "Love it! An eagle Button def makes this more interesting!"
Then I saw drooped wings. Guys, I have NEVER found a Confederate Button. Sad, but true. I quit rubbing it, and stowed it carefully in my prescription pill bottle I keep for the small stuff. Hunted about 2 more hours until it got dark, dreaming of what that button might be. Got back to my buddy's house and he said, "There they are." I said, "There WHAT are??" He read three letters that made my YEAR: "A - V - C." My day's total is below:

Ancient-80s-Nautilus-Guy's finds: (Both he and his dad use those antiques, and buddy, rarely do they get out-hunted with ANY new machine)
This is unquestionably, undoubtedly, hands-down, the best find of my LIFE. I am just really, really thrilled - and also thinking about some boy from Alabama, who probably WALKED to central Virginia . . . to defend his beloved South. Sorry for the rambling. I'm just killer-thankful.

The only Confederate button that I've ever found was half of a pewter block I. Oh yeah, If your hunting buddies ever start an antique Nautilus users club, I'll be the first to join!
