How old is this military artillery button?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Foud in VT @ an old foundation along with this 1897 V nickle.

It's an 1820's to 1830's general use artillery button which means it could have either been a federal or a state militia unit.

These are special buttons to me as one of these was only the second I ever dug up detecting. And out of thousands of buttons I've dug to date, I've only found three so it's far from a common button. Congrats on the very good find!

While the button books date them to 1808 to 1821, and they do turn up on War of 1812 sites, I believe (my opinion) that surplus of these buttons were sold or provided to state militia units, as I have found several of them on the property of the captain of a local artillery militia unit that was active in the 1820s-1840s.

Hi My Fellow TH'ers
Congrats on the War of 1812 artillery Jacket button. Your button is a bit older than what was posted here. it is from the 1808 1821. From what I cam tell it is an Y 52B. I am not able to make out the back mark.
My suggestion for a good button reference book is 'Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons Bicentennial Edition' by Alphaeus H. Albert This is available on Amazon for around $150.00 or so. There are other button reference books available but this is the one that I use for all my button finds. All of the War of 1812 buttons I have found so far are cuff buttons. Congrats again of a great button.

Great finds, Silversurfer! According to Albert, it looks like your artillery button is from 1808-1821 and all of the artillery buttons from that era are relatively scarce. Way to go!
