Yes a coin of Nerva. looks like it needs a clean.

how can i clean it without destroing its value

As it's a bronze coin, with that build up on it, it might be a tough one and you could loose a lot of the detail.

If you get enough bronze the silver will follow. Keep digging:thumbsup:

Nerva ruled 96-97AD, The coin looks like a AE As.

Crus'Dads thoughts:

I have been looking at this for a while since yesterday but…

Nothing much outside of what SS and MacKaydon have already said – profile is very similar and closest to Nerva (and I think I could see a weak NER after the IMP) but I could not find a match listed in either RIC, Sears or Whirlwinds that seems to have the lettering TRP on the Reverse (TRP is only shown on the Obv of Nerva coins not the Rev) with a figure that is standing or seated left. Certainly is around C1st but without measurements I can not say what type of coin even – AS is most likely. Value is not much in that state without a positive reverse ID. The AS price range of a Nerva AS is generally from Fine $120, VF $325 and EF $950.

Without a positive ID on the coin yet, you may wish to try further GENTLE cleaning and different lighting positions in your pics--to bring out more contrast of the images and legends.
Don.....

Dads latest:
I think I have cracked it after a lot of effort. The leads are lettering and reverse figure I can definitely make out:

1. On Obv they are IMP to left of head and G GERM PM to right and base. (this does not fit a Nerva coin).
2. On Obv there is TRPOT to left of a figure of Abunduntia seated left on top of Cornucopia (this is visible & does not fit Nerva either).

They do however fit the TRAJAN range of coins and the head just happens to be a horribly disfigured representation of that ruler.

So my view is Dupondis size as RIC Vol II Pt 2 (guess as only book I do not have) Trajan 411, Sears Vol II 3225 namely:

Obv IMP [CAES NERVA TRAIAN AV]G GERM PM and Rev TR POT [COS ?? PP SC] circa AD98-101 value at Fine is book at $60

That Konk can only fit one Emperor...Nerva :laughing7: but I know were you are coming from with the letters.

Dad has far too much time on his hands:

'For those, who like me, first thought this coin was a Nerva – I remembered that in the early days of a new Emperor’s reign their head could look similar to their predecessor. Sometimes it took the mint a little while to represent the new Emperor’s features more correctly or the new emperor wished initially to look like his predecessor for Kudos purposes. I also believe that the corrosion of Ivobg’s coin may also be playing a part in confusing the original outlines. When magnified there appears to be a lump below the nose feature which is not actually part of the original nose at all - although it looks like that before magnifying. Also on nearly all Nerva coins he had a much more bulbous nose feature which protruded out whereas the main bridge of the nose on this coin appears too straight. Then of course the legends make no sense for Nerva unless it is an unknown and unlisted variation.

So if you look at the Wildwinds website RIC 31 denarius you can see Nerva like bust features and it is a coin not using a bust normally seen for Trajan. See the link http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/trajan/RIC_0031.jpg It is also a coin early in Trajan’s reign. So I am going to settle 75% on an early Trajan Dupondis circa AD98-100 RIC 411 variation (will go up to 99% if weight & dimensions rule out Sestertius or AS) with a 1% chance of an unknown and unlisted Nerva.'

Great Find!...I would love to find ANYTHING that old

thank you very much
