Hi, I found one similiar to this one at an old cellar hole. A friend told me it was an old hatchet to split cedar shingles. The hole that I was searching was lived in from sometime in the 1800's to 1910.Then it burned down. My map of 1892 shows the cellar hole and the map of 1927 doesn't show it. hope this helps.

a shingle splitter would have one face nearly flat while the other would have hollow ground.
but most shingles were split using a "Fro"which had a longer blade and was meant to be driven by a wooden mallet.
You might try electrolysis to clean it,Ive got an axe head ive been working on for several days that looks similiar.

The blade face is equal on each side like a regualr hatchet/axe. This is after cleaning.

I have a hatchet head very similar, found at a 1700s trading post location. Mine cleaned up pretty good and can be found here. http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=82618. I think they were used to clean timbers down to somewhat square sizing for building. I could be wrong but this makes the most sense. There are no markings on the axe head.

I don't think you will find a name or marking on that broadhead because they were made by blacksmiths prior to 1800. Somewhere around that time they changed over to a more conventional design. Frank
