Back to the club and some interesting finds

I went back to the club again today and had some luck. I found a heavy copper nail with 57 on the head. It looks like one used to mark telephone/power poles.
In a hillside I found 6 brenneke shotgun slugs that look like someone was target practicing. These look like old ones, not original 1898 but at least 1950 or before I think. I found 2 wheaties, 2 Kennedy halves, a 1946 silver dime, and a dateless buffalo nickel. All in all a good day.





I got a call from the school today and I now know the name of the owner of the class ring. I have made a few calls, but so far no luck. I will keep trying to find the owner and let you know when I succeed.

Are those screws inside the slugs? WTH? I've never seen screws inside lead before. Any ideas?

Yes they are screws. It is part of the design of the brenneke shotgun slug which was designed by a German named Brenneke in 1898. The newer brenneke slugs now have a plastic rod and cup that replaced the screw. The shotgun slugs we see mostly in the US are Fost slugs which do not have the screw or the wadding on the screw.
