The farmer said I could go anytime and the corn was just starting to come up. I decided to go deeper into the field and after a couple buttons I got an IH 1864. I only made it about 5 feet and I got a nice Tomback button. Working my way back on the next row as I got close to were I dug the button and IH I got a pretty good sound and it was a LC and I could see it had some kind of mark on it. After I cleaned it up the stamp was clear as well as it was crudely altered on the back. I'll be heading back to that spot in the field!

Very interesting LC! I wondered if maybe someone was trying to make it into a button?

You certainly dug some quality finds J64. I don't blame you for wanting to go right back there and look forward to your next post.

Nice Counterstamped LC!

Awesome. What is that one brass item at top
Right of your group shot? Looks almost like a gear. I have found several
Of those on a 1800s site and have no idea what it is.

There off old parasols.

Nice finds, but I would confirm that it's OK to go in there after the field is planted. Some farmers are touchy about that and others not so much.

Very nice finds. That LC is really sweet, especially with the counter stamp. I am used to seeing letters stamped on them, that "symbol" seems odd to me... odd in a very cool way.

Best of luck to you sir!

Yes, he told me the day he planted, it was ok to go you won't hurt anything just walk between the rows. I definitely wouldn't be out there without permission.

Nice find! Still trying to get my first LC! It is elusive apparently.

I've encountered a similar counter stamp in my research. From what I can recall it was that of a French merchant. Perhaps this coin was used in the Fur Trade and passed through the hands of some French trappers.

I hope that the farmer will give you free corn.

Congratualtions on the finds! :occasion14:

That is one cool old LC. I'll bet you'll never find another like that (or anyone else for that matter).

I remember hearing very long ago about how sometimes such markings were made to a coin or other common object, and often used as a sort of signal or to relay a message. If caught with the "coded" message, nobody else could know the meaning.

Great stuff!!!

Congrats on the counter stamped LC. I've only found one in my hunting career. I was definitely pleased to see it come up, as I'm sure you were as well. Great addition to any collection.
