So I have been trying to get permission to hunt this site for a little over 6 months. The owners live in Louisville but the property is about an hour and a half away. They always have workers there that tend to the property and farm it and stuff. The property was settled in 1792 and still has an original shack looking thing. There are a total of three houses on the property which sits right next to a very big creek. Every time I stop in the owners are never there. Well, I have been extremely busy with school but now that school is out until August I have more time to detect. This is actually my first day out to detect since about November of '07. Well I got a few firsts today. The first good target I dug was about 5" down and is a 1893 "O" quarter. I can't tell if I hit it digging it up or if a plow got it. I'm going with a plow because of the design and to soothe my nerves. I also found my first civil war button (at least I guess it is, I know nothing about buttons). It is broken into two pieces but I was actually able to locate the other half. I spent about 15 minutes trying to track the smaller half down. I had the pleasure of digging about 45 pull tabs and about 25 pieces of iron, including nails and random stuff. I included some of the cooler iron items. I also found what looks like an old broken comb??? Thanks for looking. I wasted half of the day trying to locate land owners before I stopped here so they gave me permission to hunt as often as I would like so I am heading back there first thing in the morning. They have allowed others to metal detect it though so who knows.

sorry the pics are so big. I just bought a new camera today and I am not using my computer so I don't have a photo editor. I have no idea what the next three pictures contain. All I know is that it was about 6 inches down, it's heavy, and it was full of mud. Thanks for looking!!

Well, when you do please repost the pics. We want to see them ;D

Welcome back, Kevo! You came back in true style and didn't disappoint. That site might have a 1794 Liberty Cap coppa or two waiting for you!

 nice job there. get back there and find some more. let us know how you did. me i whent out this morning 6:30 on side of m26 high way looking for copper nugets the mine rock gets crushed in to gravel so copper nugets are to be found plus 3 pennies one looks a if the road moer got to it first bringing my penny count up

Solid Finds there. If you dig with a serrated-edged tool, you might have done the work on the quarter, unfortunately. The button is pre-CW (the first button photos). It is a c.1820's Navy button. Someone will come along with a full ID soon, I'm sure--since the backmark is legible.
Did the button come out of the hole in two pieces, or was it bent when you found it?

The circular brass piece may in fact be a colonial buckle of some sort.

What a way to jump back into your new season of hunting, Kev! :o Awesome Barber and love the button!

Congrats on those finds! Nana :)

Wow, I love the early Navy button, as was mentioned it is pre Civil War. I hope you can find more of those! Also looks like a nice assortment of early stuff I would definately dig all but iron at that site. Might be some cool pewter buttons lurking around there.

Best of luck to you,
Steve
