Be warned - it may be a bad year for snakes.

Most of the rattlesnakes bites around here are people who don't know the proper way to pick up a rattler and get bit on their hand or arm. I've been bit by garter snakes that twist their head around real quick, and I thought I had a good hold of them.

The proper way to pick up any poisonous snake is only after it's been dead for a day or so.

yummy.webp

Yummy.

They are also called spoiled rotten!

I used to raise finches. The snakes would sneak in the aviary & eat a bird. Then they were too fat too get back out through the screen. I would take them out to the country and let them go. They got a few parakeets over the years too!

What kind of snakes were they?

Corn snakes & Racers are the only 2 that got in the cages. My daughter kept a corn snake as a pet for awhile then let it go out by a lake.

Not really any snakes at all here where I live. Last encounter I did have some time back, camped down in the San Luis Valley, about daylight and I didn't want to get out of my bedroll cause it was warm, a rattler buzzed right by my head. Yes I got straight up and the rattler cut a trail for parts unknown. Nature's alarm clock.

Where snakes are concerned any year is a bad year.Damned old cottonmouths, had me reaching for the toilet paper several times.Sneaky suckers they are!

Here in East Texas, at least when detecting the woods and creeks, I carry my .45 Colt SAA with snake-shot. Cottonmouths, Timber Rattlers. Always some regular loads for the more dangerous species, the human, not to mention wild hogs. When I was young, I would catch them with a snake-stick and grab them behind the head, but I don't trust myself now at this age. Tall boots (wellies) always. Where there is one, there is always another, you can bet on it. But all that being said, mosquitoes are the worst enemy.

Copperheads loves to sun bath on rocks in Connecticut.

I thought copperheads were in parts of New York...my neighbor supposedly killed one over a year ago before they moved, however, I think it was a northern water snake. His description made it too big for a copperhead.
what size are they on your local?

The next door guy said it was 5-6 foot long. Too big for a copper head.

Traipsing around in the sage deserts of Idaho, I've had many encounters with snakes in my years. Mostly bull snakes, but I've had plenty of run ins with rattlers as well. When I was in my teens, my father handed me a .22 revolver with some rat shot, and said "keep this on your hip, if you are out walking around."

For the most part, the rattlesnakes here will usually give you fair warning.... unless you sneak up on one, or climb into a cave where they are hibernating. (been there.) But, I still don't like 'em. bull snakes are harmless, the others.... yeah, no bueno. Lots of basalt and craggy stuff they like to lounge around in, so I always keep an eye out when walking around out in the scrub. This time of year, the whistle pigs are running around, so they will be out and about pretty soon too.

They do kinda taste like chicken though, I suppose. I do not like rattlesnakes, at all.

Went fishing with some buddies, ran into 2 black snakes and a baby copperhead during our short walk, definitely will be a bad year for them.

Sounds like a very good year to me!!

Roughly 40 years ago a buddy and I were out hunting coyotes in
the So. Cal. desert area, near Barstow. This was legal night hunting,
and it was a warm Fall night.

We had called in a coyote, and after dropping it about 150 yds. out
I headed out with just a flashlight to retrieve it. Didn't bring the
pistol as I knew this critter was 100% deceased..bad mistake.

When heading across the desert with just a flashlight and you're mind
and eyes are focused on where you saw the critter drop, sometimes
you don't see things right in front of you.

When I did notice what was in front of me, I came to an immediate stop.
There were three Mojave Green's sitting in a curved line about 5' in front
of me, and when I turned around to back way I realized I'd stepped right
over the top of two more. They had me surrounded..or more accurately,
I'd stepped right in the middle of them, and they weren't pleased with
how I'd invaded their space.

Looked back towards the truck a hundred yards away, and hollered "Rick,
bring me the shotgun!!" While he was walking out to me, I hatched an
escape plan while calculating the time it would take to get me to the nearest
hospital.

Rick showed up with what we called our "Snakebuster", which was a
single shot Sears 12 ga., sawed off down to about a 8" barrel. Rick
had machined a pistol grip for it, and with a 3" mag. load of #9 shot
it terminates snakes in a hurry. And no, it wasn't anywhere near legal. shoot.gif

Had to shoot the two behind me to get out of there, and then took a
wide berth around them to finally get that coyote picked up.

I hate to have to kill snakes, but prefer, whenever possible, to simply
move them out of my way..those two behind me left me no options.
They were less than 5' away, pissed off and coiled up..just waiting for me
to enter their striking range.

Man you sure kept your cool there!Usually snakes don,t have a chance at me because they can,t fly as high as I can jump.Be careful out there all.

I see dozens of snakes every year ,I raise chicken which attract snakes. the snakes love eggs ,baby chicks and the mice that are drawn to the lost feed.
here's one from last year I got out of the chicken nest box and it bit me good. I'm getting old and slow but I can still go.
The only snakes I kill are copperheads near yard. I wear boots year round and watch what I'm doing.View attachment 1916432
