I gave the family homestead a break today and did some CW hunting. I had my best button day ever. Got my 1st 2 NY buttons , my 1st Artillery and a few others. The whole buck & ball set was a cool find as well. Also got my 1st firing caps.

You found a nice camp-gilted buttons cleaned up nicely. The buck and ball looks 69 caliber. If that is the case, those three roundballs aside it are most likely 36 caliber rifle or pistol bullets. Generally, the buckshot associated with buck and ball cartridges will measure twenty-something millimeters (often 23-27 mm). I have found a few varying sizes on 69 cal. buck and ball combos that measure differently, but never over 30 mm's. Most of what I found date 1835-1842 and were dug in camps belonging to the US Dragoons; The Artillery and the Infantry. Good Luck with the camp--I look forward to seeing more of your posts.

JDug, How did you clean them? I found an Artillery button similar to the one you found but I'm afraid of damaging it in the cleaning process. Thanks. rmbutcher.

Looks like you have topped them. AVC!

I think that would be a best button day for many of us!
Thank you sir. This spot is out of control. I dug another 9 buttons today including a A V C!

Nice buttons! I dug a NY button identical to yours in Frederick Co., MD back in 2002-3. I wonder if we were digging in the same place?
