Best mxt coil?? Or coil, coil on the wall which is the best of all?

Hi,

I have a MXT and am wondering about ordering a 4.5 x 7 Excellorator coil. But I wonder how it compares with the largest, coil 18 inch, which everyone seems to want.

Am I waisting my money on buying this small coil or should I think big and get the biggest coil? Anyone have any experiences with both?

Small coil = The small coils work well in trashy areas to get in between the trash signals. But the problem you will find with the small coils is your depth goes down and you loose the deeper signals. So it is really a trade off.

Large coil = The coil finds deeper targets, however some people say that you loose sensitivity to smaller targets. You can also cover a lot more ground faster. I don't have the 18" coil, so I couldn't tell you for sure about the sensitivity. With this coil, you can hit a coin masked by trash and you may never even hear the coin signal. So once again, a trade off.

I use the 9" x 12" DD 1400 on my DFX and I am very happy. It cuts out a ton of the bad ground mineralization found here in the great pacific northwest which allows me to hear the deeper signals that I couldn't hear before because of the mineralization issue.
