Poor Miss Buff is sick. She is a 2 year old Old English Duckwing Bantam gamebird. She weighs in at a hefty 12 ounces or so. She lives in luxury with her sister Miss Honey and Mr. Silver Roo. Both of them including the rooster are very sweet. He is a "chicken" in more than one use of the word - a total caterwallering coward. She had an egg incident, I think. One egg that was laid was missing part of a shell. I have antibiotics and probiotics in her water. Massaged her crop today to try to get anything bad to dislodge. Used warm water and melted butter (yum) in a syringe with no needle for her to drink, a drop at a time. She actually liked it. Don't know what's wrong so if she's still here in the am I will try to get her to the specialist vet. In the pic I am cleaning her...egg laying device. She is getting an undercarriage bath with epson salts in water, per instructions. Best pic of me in 20 years and I'm doing a rear end job on a hen. Sort of. She didn't seem to mind but couldn't figure it out. After all, she is a chicken and did not attend college. And found a new use for q-tips. Ugh. What we won't do for our pets.

Well you'll have very clean chicken Smokey.
Hope it's just a little burp in her laying cycle and not a blockage.

See if she lays another egg in the 26 hr cycle.
Heat, feed, stress, infection all are causes, too much calcium/too less.
Chicken-well named as they seem to be chicken of all new things.

I wore a different coloured jacket into the barn.
I might as well been a predator of some sorts. Scared the youngest hen (yr old) Bubbles the rooster freaked out.
Result laying dropped from 21 down to 12 eggs then it took 3 days to get back up. A few eggs without shells, a few thin shelled.

They don't like change/strangers, yesterday I put in a small through door in outside enclosure easy to get them over to the large one across the driveway.
Well they were right upset at this new thing being constructed.
So I will pay for the convenience I'm sure in the egg production cycle.

Well, we are home after a four hour wait in the vet center. Visit, xrays and a fecal test and radiology consult from elsewhere. And $407 later I found out I accidentally gave her the RIGHT antibiotic and she has pneumonia but it is getting better and I got a probiotic for her (she loves it). And no a $35 hen is NOT worth it, but she is a pet. Not livestock. She actually seems much better today. She is very small. That being said the small ones are very subject to weather changes, etc. I still have the heat light in their house. All the cats say hi too. That place was a zoo. One guy had a ball python, about 1' long.

It ain,t nothing but money. if you can,t use it to care for your loved ones, what good is it? I once spent a large amount of money to save my dog.I,d do it again, she was a fine dog, best I,ve ever had in every respect. Hope your chicken continues to improve and your cats enjoy good health. And best wishes to you too,in all your endeavors.

She was so happy to get home! Ate her probiotics like it was candy. Must have tasted good. Her wings no longer drooped. Presumably, if I would have just kept her on the antibiotics another week, the vet appt could have been prevented, but just like people going to the doctor, sometimes its necessary even if you think nothing is wrong.

I got a bunch of money and quarters. So...had a nice time, saw a duck, met a fellow detectorist. Nothing spectacular but with those results it really costs too much to go the 78 miles one way these days for a handful of quarters.
