Nice silvers, too bad you rubbed them

Common Silver - no numismatic value so no big deal. You should see the ones I clean with the dremel!! ;D

The SLQ was not rubbed

But how do you know it's not a key date with all the dirt on it? Plus I hate to see stuff 100+ years old get dinged up, even if it is common

90% of the silver coins I find I can see the date before clearing the rest of the dirt off of them. Dinged up? ??? Some take it to the extreme but this is my HOBBY and I do it for fun and seeing what I have found when I find it is part of the fun. If clearing a little dirt ruins a coin, then I guess I have a worthless coin but a fantastic experience of finding it. It's not like I ever have to worry about it because I have never sold anything that I have ever found. So value is a neat thing to talk about about but it is not why I am metal detecting. When I am gone I guess my kids will cuss me out because I rubbed a coin!!

Also, many coins (that are in the ground before I found them) have a reduce numismatic value by that fact alone. "ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE" Those common silvers look good in my case whether I "rubbed" them or not. I see your point but I guess I just have a different attitude towards common silvers.

Most of us just post our finds to share with others not to get critiqued on how we treat or clean OUR coins! Take another look at the SLQ-- it was treated with care after finding it. If a little rub gets you then I bet the lawn mower "silver slivers" must make you cringe!! ;D

Bill Hilly-- no --but sandpaper is a good idea Thanks for the tip!! The dremel does a fine job too!

I remember when I first started (several years ago) I used to clean every wheat penny but after several thousand wheat pennies, they get a quick date check and then into the wheat bucket with the rest of them.

Thanks for everyone commments I appreciate it.

I would rather have a coin with details: cleaned than details: corroded or environmental damage

Re: Best SLQ I've ever dug !!

Well, I can see your point, they are your coins and you do with them as you wish- Good Luck!

The SLQ was not rubbed

If a little rub gets you then

So it was dug like that?
Hey I don't sell my finds either, but I can wait to get home and clean the silver coins with just water and see what they are. If your plans are to leave the coins to your children, then do them a favor and stop rubbing them as they come out of the ground. I have personally seen silver come from the ground with no "Enviromental Damage". So yes they can be worth more for your kids down the road.
Thanks for sharing your finds with us,
Hilly

ps lose the dremel

Re: Best SLQ I've ever dug !!

Great coin, Ron!!!

Doesn't look rubbed to me, but what do I know. I'll tell you. I rubbed a couple myself, so I know what a rubbed coin looks like! I'm with you that on common silvers I want them clean.

I usually throw them in water as is & take them home. Then I use a toothbrush & water. I never use a Dremel on stubborn stains, it wastes electricity. I put the dirty coin on a brick, set another brick on top of that one and rub back and forth. ;D

That SLQ is one to be proud of!

Re: Best SLQ I've ever dug !!

Youze guys crack me up! Whenever i tell a friend or aqaintance that I've dug a couple neat or old coins or relics, the FIRST thing that comes out of their mouth is, "what's it worth?" "Is your machine paid for yet?
I also own a couple classic muscle cars. Whenever my dad inquires about them or any upgrades I've done, it's "but will you get your money back out of it?" Nope dad, it's a hobby I enjoy, who cares if I take a loss, I don't plan on selling anyway.
I like my silver to shine, I have even chemically dipped alot of silver. Although I don't do it anymore, I would still love to. Some like that dull patina. Not me, the brighter the better! I do know enough to not clean a valuble key date anything. To each his own! ffd

Now that is the kind of humor I appreciate!! :laughing7:

Thanks for the laugh!! Now I gotta find a couple bricks as I dug 3 more silvers today!!

Re: Best SLQ I've ever dug !!

Those would be some nice silver coin finds if you didn't clean them with steel wool!

I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight with these images in my head. I wish I never opened your post.

And please, for the love of God, stop using the dremel!

Re: Best SLQ I've ever dug !!

Still a little tarnish on this one!! I 'll get it off! :laughing7:

Re: Best SLQ I've ever dug !!

Spectacular SQL, congrats, you definitely made more than gas money than day. There's more silver where that came from. I'm glad I didn't scratch it when you tossed it to me.

What does this mean? Thanks

Re: Best SLQ I've ever dug !!

Ron,

You certainly take better care of your silver than I do...I just can't stop fiddling with them after I dig them up. :laughing9: ::)
