Big Batwing Buckle

Finally got out detecting today, been a busy few weeks. Well tried area in the woods I detected a few weeks ago. I was getting a bit discouraged, one shot gun shell butt after another, ended up digging 55 of them. I don't like to pass up those targets because I recovered a Machin Mills halfpenny that sounded and VDI was similar to shell butts, also some buttons read similar.

Anyway, got one nice sounding target and it was about 7-8" deep. A really cool, large Batwing buckle!! Really nice, has some little circle ornate designs. Over 3 inches in length. I believe it's colonial any info would be appreciated.

Its a horse harness buckle, early to mid 19th C.
What makes it nice is the design,as most are blank. It maybe late 18th C, because most have the off-set central bar.

Sick old buckle, might be a shoe buckle but I have no idea, also great call on digging all shotgun shells many many buttons ring up in that range. I have a personal grudge against shotgun shells, I curse at everyone of them.

WOW! That is one awesome old relic find there. I hope you can get an ID from some of the experienced folks here on T-net. I am thinking colonial for sure. SWEET!

Thanks for reply. I've seen these posted before and some at my club meetings but I don't recall seeing any with designs on them. Seems strange to me that a horse harness buckle would have those ornate designs on it. But I don't know very much about buckles. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for reply. Yes painful indeed, couldn't believe how many I was digging up today but I think it shows I was in an that hasn't been detected very much. I had to take that picture I couldn't believe how many came out of my pouch today.

Nothing strange about decorated horse harness buckles (in general), many are very blingy.

Your buckle cleaned up so nicely. How did you do it? Nice find!

Dry-brushed with toothbrush first, looked in good shape so I then rinsed in distilled water, Dried and applied a light coat of museum wax.
