Big Buttons and A Piece of Silver

Hit another field yesterday that surrounded an old Colonial site. Dug these four buttons, a Copper Tag and a Silver Coin. The coin is well worn and the only letters that I can see are DE and a partial letter. Any ideas as to what this coin is. Not sure about the tag. Some of the buttons still had string attached to the hoops on the backs.

could be a canadian silver coin...some have DEI around the edge...

First of all, I'd get back to that field as soon as possible! Those are really great looking C1750-1790 Dandy buttons. If I had to guess, I'd say that silver coin is a Spanish One or Half Reale. I'm sure somebody here on T-Net will be able to identify it. Great finds!

oh yeah, spanish reales do have DEI on the edge too...

Yes the Reales have Dei Gratia on them ("By the grace of God").  That's what you've got there, and depending on the size of your buttons, I'd say it's a Half Real (a little smaller than dime-sized).  But it could be a One Real too. Nice flat buttons!  And a great piece of Colonial Silver!

Beautiful bottons and great half reale. Gotta love the Spanish silver. I still haven't found any yet.
