HEY GUYS AND GALS

What a day !!!!!!

I,m still so excited....these kinda days are rare indeed !

I left this morning with a plan...I,m gonna clean out all the iron and junk so I can see what exactly is there.

Turned the detector on and first swing ..a clean crisp hit...the 1885 fishscale !!

Then 10 mins later ran into the iron.... 2 big pieces of iron lighting up the detector with the broken signals that it gives on the CZ 21. I removed the first piece and discarded it where it would never bother me again.... swung the detector again....still 2 signals !!! The broken signal was still there but....there was a clean crisp siganl just a couple inches from it now. Must have been masked by the first piece of iron.

Boy was I ever happy to see a big coin looking up at me from the over turned mud....only knew it was a big coin at first til I picked it up and seen the dark color..good sign that it is a silver in this environment. Then I could see Barber bust... knew I had something special...or at least special to me. Of course I had to run over to Ed to show him.
Pulled 3 more coppers outta the same area...both masked by iron. Ed moved to a different spot and I moved a few hundred feet to try another little spot. Same thing again...but this time I caught the signal between 2 pieces of iron before removing it. Dug a shovel full of mud and removed it ...checked the mud and the signal was still there loud and crisp...could tell it was a coin. So I took the shovel and cut the mud in half so would be easier to find with the pinpointer.

Waved the detector over the the mud ...IT WAS GONE...I frantically searched all around and nothing !!! So turned around and searched where I had laid the shovel...sure enough..picked up the signal in a little pice of mud that must have stuck to the shovel....and out pops my one dime !!!

By now ED had returned from his venture he managed to find a few little trinkets that were quite interesting (will post his finds tomo )....so we had a cigar and rested for a few minutes. He went to try another little spot down the beach and I returned to the silver spot as I had found the big bottle earlier and set it on a rock and the tide was coming in...didn,t want to lose it.
EVEN THE BOTTLE WAS MASKED !!!...had a big iron hit in the rocks...so I rolled the rocks away to get at the iron and there was the bottle sticking outta the mud under the rocks.!!!
I was walking fast to get back and swinging the detector fast....for whatever reason the CZ 21 does quite well with a fast swing...ZIP another clean hit...rolled the mud over and seen something round...thought was another coin....then I could feel the broken clasp on the back humped up...knew it was a button...dipped it in a couple puddles...STILL ON MY BUTTON RUN !!

One of them days where you can,t miss and will remember this one for awhile !!!

PS...I will be removing more iron and junk from sites in the future !

Ya ,...we have been very fortunate..no doubt.

But I think it is getting beat....hope not..but it is looking that way at a couple spots for sure.

However..all depends how you look at it also....3 of us today in the same area and we dug approx 50+ targets that could have been a nice button.

Mind you .. we didn,t get 50+ keepers....but nonetheless anyone of them targets "coulda been" THE TARGET.

Definitely the easy targets are gone...it is down to deep / behind the rock / under the hot rock / under the hot brick and under the iron digging now.

You must be still new, ;) because that is nothing close to beat! Beat is when you walk around for an hour to dig one hole, and you hope there's actually a target down there that's not iron. What you have going is target practice!

Ride the wave lobster boy. :laughing7:

WOW...A FEW HUNDRED ??

Now that is impressive....you must have almost every kind that is known.

Odds would say that there shoulda been badge or plate having dug that many buttons...or at least I would think so.

I,ll be 100 years old before I ever find that many...... so maybe I,ll just skip finding all them buttons go right to finding the badges and plates.:tongue3:

Keep in mind, there was probably 20-30 thousand plain or non military buttons in the big mix
I think I dug close to a thousand buttons one year and only had about a dozen good military in there

IP is so right, we've hit those beat sites year after year... sometimes giving it a year or 2 break and then back again...may get quiet but worth trips back!

Velcro, zippers, and synthetic fabrics weren't invented
Cotton and other natural fibres wore out and everything just about had buttons; people lived on some of those old sites for generation or more and had big families so all that contributed to so many buttons being on some sites, and having plenty of sites doesn't hurt either !

So after a couple years...why is it you find things again.

Frost moving things around or just a new perspective on the site after being away from it for a long period of time.?

You guys have put in some serious time then.... I have yet to go to these kinda sites other than the one I,m currently hunting...need to knock on doors and get permission .

Other than the military buttons...I have only found maybe 6 more buttons there....seems kinda odd.

All about location !!

There are numerous reasons and for field finds, obviously from being ploughed but yes frost helps, moisture in the ground...different machine, angle, speed...i could go on... I've seen spots that were pounded by other to go in and get buttons and a cannonball...good to research but nice to have a fall back site too...

I have never hunted a plowed field ....but have seen moisture make a big difference.

Have learnt that no place is hunted out also.....and someone with different thoughts on a location where things might be prolly makes quite a difference also.

Cousin Eds wife is from a farming family..they own 75 acre plus farms and larger in the valley..could make for some interesting sites...need to find some research on them places.

Research is good for people like me that can't hunt in the winter.... You won't have time, at the rate your going... LOL...

I been flying by the seat of my pants so far and I know that is not the norm.

So much history here that just about any place has good potential.

I,m sure is just a matter of time before I,ll have to take the time to do the research. Have talked with a few older people in the surrounding area..they are a wealth of information. Got a few good leads from them.

Just gotta wait for the thaw....tried a local field late this afternoon....broke my shovel..lol...IT IS NOT TIME YET !!!

Beautiful finds!!!
