I found this bottle while looking for Megladon Teeth and other fossil bones. It was stuck in mud along coast line. I have never seen a bottle like it. No brand or other markings and no seams anywhere. I believe it is at least 200 years old maybe older. I don't want to clean it because it is so beautiful. Note the neck. It look handmade to me

Any thoughts?

Cheers in searching for treasures.

That's an old bottle! & a beauty! I don't know ages at all, but someone here will be able to give you info. Did you find any shark teeth? I was on Tybee a few months back looking for teeth, found some fossilized shells but alas, none.

Mid to late 1800's case gin bottle, nice iridesence on it...

What you have is a case or "coffin" gin bottle.

Thanks all. Yes. Here are the meg and sharks teeth. Also found manatee and whale bones and a dolphin vert. New to this site but also am an amateur Dino hunter. The tooth in my profile I found last week in Choteau Montana and its a bipedal predator and ancestor to T Rex and dates to 75 mm years ago.

Very nice bottle looks resemble whats known as Mercury Glass. Found a pendant once that had a glass ball with iridescent coloring surrounded by two dolphins.

I like the drippy applied top on your case gin , Congrats !!!!

Good find. It's a case bottle, or 'case gin' named for the typical content. It dates from 1870-1900, in all likelihood.

The iridescence on the bottle is caused by the breakdown of some of the glass components . . . the glass surface becomes irregular (on a micro level) and refracts the light that strikes it. That phenomenon is NOT called 'mercury glass' which is a completely different sort of condition.

Bottles recovered in NE Florida salt marshes with this iridescence are said to exhibit 'St. Augustine sheen.' It has eye appeal, and some collectors really like it.

Thanks So much all. I am new to this site but looking forward to contributing.

The iridescence appears to "wipe" off. So clearly I won't clean it. We're these bottles hand made? It's in absolutely perfect condition, not a nick or a scratch. I was thinking it was older but bottles are new to me. I have a bunch more that ill post in time.

Thanks James.

I also think it is closer to 10 inches.

Thanks all.

@bonedoggle

Scrubbing the bottle will take down the high-points that are refracting the light in the rainbow effect . . . the surface would be dull and not pleasing. Clean the interior of the case bottle as you wish, but just give the surface a liberal windex soak and rinse with tap water.

Thank You. That was my instinct. New to bottles but I do know you never want to really scrub anything found.

Cheers to more treasure.
