Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
Got on this forum a couple of years ago...and three machines later, I'm digging every chance I get. I'm really hooked on doing the research for relics but the more that I'm on here...the more that I'm starting to become intrigued with jewelry finds. Specifically, I'd love to find a class ring and then hit the bricks trying to find the original owner. I just saw Ed-D's class ring find and its got me thinking.

Anyone willing to give me some tips on where to get started. Are most of the non-relic diggers looking at parks or are there areas that you key in on that produce better than others? Seems obvious but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in adv!

Parks and beaches are the best place to look and schools and churches. found all my rings mostly at the beach where people swim.

Thanks Papa. Seems like everyone says "just dig" but there has to be a plan. There's always going to be plenty of finds in the ground...

CD,
I've never dug one in over 10+ years, but I don't really hunt the places where they could be found is the problem. I would think schools, sports fields, and beaches would be great spots. Good luck to you.

The plan, would be to dig in places where someone may have lost what you're looking for, such as swimmers wear jewelry when swimming. So, go to where they would swim. Trouble is, try to name a place where someone could not have possibly lost a ring.

Hope that helps.

I could tell you everything other than dig... I want you to learn yourself, like most everyone else did and like I did. :icon_thumleft:

It's fun to branch out.:icon_thumright: I haven't dug a class ring, but have noticed that often they're dug on or near sports fields, under bleachers, or where people sit on the ground watching. Sand volleyball courts have produced rings for me. One of my heavy gold rings was in an iron-infested area of a small beach which I guess other local diggers had deliberately skipped, as it had been smack up against old iron for dozens of years before I dug it. My other gold ring was in the very unlikely spot of a dirt embankment alongside an abandoned road, the same embankment where my son also dug a gold ring. Go figure! Rings can be anywhere, but school-related or swimming areas seem the best spots to discover class rings. Good luck & looking forward to reading what you dig in 2014. HAVE FUN! :cat: Andi

Places where high school and college kids hang out and play. Make your plans to hit the Florida beaches during and after spring break.

I found both my class rings in 2 different parking areas that young people use for the same swimming/partying spot. One was in the least used spot ( detectorists probably overlooked this one before ) and the other was on the opposite end from the popular end of a roadside pull off for the swimming hole. I had seen people detecting the often used end years ago. I assume snow plows pushed the ring to the other end. It was only a couple inches under the gravel. My suggestion would be to take a moment to look around the swimming areas for places someone might sit to rest or even change clothes if in a private spot.

My favorite spots are older yards. My next is sidewalks, but I have had people gripe at me for digging in front of their house.

Go to a local library and get access to Sanborn Fire Insurance maps and compare those to existing maps. Look for the older parks and school yards.

Old yards are my favorite, especially where the clothesline used to be.

Also, if you hit a playground, make sure to spend some time under the monkey bars. Kids hang upside down, and all manner of stuff falls off. Lol...

I actually found the class ring that I returned in a tot lot at a park and the latest ring I found was in another tot lot, the other good ring ring was beside an outdoor basketball court at a high school, have found about 13 costume rings all at parks have not done much water hunting but all you need to do is look at the beach and shallow water forum to see the abundance of jewelry to be found in water(lakes, rivers or ocean).Just keep swinging your coil and soon you will find what you are seeking.:hello:

I found both my class ring and my 14k wedding band at the same local park that I know for a fact has been hit by others over the years. There's a lot of trash and finding jewelry means you will dig a lot of trash (much more then at older home sites) but it's so worth it when that shinny chunk of precious metal is staring back at you from your plug.

Thanks for the advice. Nothing would be cooler than finding an old college ring and returning it to the owner.
