Tried a new spot today and found these buttons in the woods. They were within about a 1' area. My guess is someone put their coat down more than 150 years ago and forgot it. There were 2 Municipal Police buttons and one Brooklyn Police Button. The Brooklyn police were merged in with the rest of the city in 1854 so the Brooklyn button has to be at least that old. My guess is that as buttons fell off, the Brooklyn police just replaced them with the others. Makes sense that's why I would find them together. There were all made by Covill MFG Co in Waterbury.

Hardcore history right there. I have always got as much or more thrill from finding such things as I do coins. Guess it is a good thing as I have been on the worst coin draught I have ever been on. Flat buttons galore and other relics from early 1800's sites and not a single coin. Congrats on some GREAT buttons. :icon_thumleft:

Super finds doninbrewster. Thanks for sharing...

I agree TNGUNS, it's interesting to find these things related to history although I collect colonial coins and like nothing better than finding them. Either way, you never know what the next hit will bring.

Nice buttons in nice condition. Ironic that you found them on 9/11. If you had found some NYFD buttons there too that would have really been ironic.

This is a great police find. If you put it on ebay the police collectors would be all over this. Good job!!! :hello2:

Hey doninbrewster,

Beautiful condition on those NYCPD buttons, sir. You picked a fitting day to show them. Was the Brooklyn Police Department of only four years duration?

can you post the back of the buttons

Never Forget...how fitting a find for 9/11! Beautiful finds.

makes me wonder if something might of happened to the officer 150 years ago causing him to lose his button off his coat.i just dont see a police officer would of left his coat somewheres.

Great buttons
