I found this near item..near a lake that had seen quiet a bit of activity going back to the 1700's. It appears to be a silver buckle..but there isn't anything on the back to indicate if there were clasps attached to it.. Also there are intials..TN...engraved on the back..Maybe the person who designed it and there is a lion...Too small to show....Any idea..what it could be...It is very beautiful design..and as stated before..it may be silver...and it is about twice the size of a postage stamp..There were also many coins from the 1800's found nearby also...Very small..Can anyone tell me what this is??...Any help would be appreciated......

Could you please show a pic of the back of the object?

Buckle, and a nice one. You can see the hole in the middle where the center bar was attached.

Do you have many old finds? Always interested to see what turns up in your part of the world.

How do you get pictures of that size on TN? Every time mine is too big, they wont post it until I shrinkk it down.

Hey..Skypirate...I don't know TN..accepted the large pic..BTW..I am not computer savvy..so how do you shrink the pic anyway to make it appear smaller? It is too large..And thanks so much for the info Crusader. I do suspect that it may be from England..as Newfoundland had very close ties to Britain..and was England's oldest colony....at least..I have some idea of what this is..

Thank you so very much...Silver Searcher and Crusader for your help!!!...I didnt know it was a shoebuckle...I discovered more information on this buckle...It was made in London, England....by Thomas Nortzell....indicated by the initials TN..in the late 1700..early 1800s....and it is SILVER..indicated by the lion hallmark!!! You learn something new everyday!!.. There is a great site on the web on British Hallmarks and makers..I was so elated....Wow!!

BTW...this little gem almost ended up in my trash apron because I thought it was garbage!! But something seemed different about it...That was a close one!!

If you hunt old sites, and almost threw that away, I wonder what else you could have and not realize. A couple years ago a guy I know told me he thinks he tossed a Spanish cob to the trash. I've also known other people to throw away buttons! That was until they were made aware some are good enough to pay for your next detector.

Hey Iron Patch

Yes..I do make interesting finds..I am however a coin hunter...not into relics..even though a cannonball would be nice...But you do make an interesting point about buttons..I do throw away buttons..except those I can readily identify..But other than that I do check before I discard anything....Sometimes..I do wonder though!! :-[

And Silver Searcher...I am not sure about what kind of shoe buckle it is..weather it is a Diamante or not. Will have to check it out. Are you familiar with British Hallmarks? There is a great site..that identifies all of the Hallmarks and makers of jewelry in England...because according to British law...all jewelry with silver or gold..had to have these Hallmarks..which my shoebuckle had..Anyway...thanks for your help, it was greatly appreciated...

Oh man, stop that, you're throwing money away! If it's old, and something, it has some value.

You being a coin hunter perhaps this might be one you're after? :)
