Bullet Melting Ladle?

it's 7 inches long , and made of brass . It's marked JOHN HOOD CO. BOSTON .

Any ideas on it ? Thanks !

I've seen this company listed as a manufacturer of dental supplies in the early 1900's.

Perhaps the ladle is from a dental casting kit. Similar ladles are still made for use by dental technicians, jewelers, and others specializing in small metal castings. See item #2 at:

Apparently, they also made such things as hoof levels. So probably a general metal products maker. I think bullet casting was the most probable use, being likely the most common casting activity. A listing on time on eBay was for a John Hood Co. "undomestic" ladle.

Awfully small for bullet casting. If it is old, the old timey bullets were quite heavy and large diameter and this little ladle wouldn't hold much lead. I'd probably have to agree it was for casting dental appliances , probably gold. Monty
