Hey guys I recently made it out to an old place we have been working for awhile and recovered a button that I've never seen before. I hope that someone will know a little about it. The front is gone but the markings on the rear are mostly still readable. The best I can tell it reads " VERY FINE ORANOI COL**" the third word is hard to read and the two * are hard to make out. But the eagle is very clear and the loop is attached near the center of the breast. Little of the gold is still in place. If anyone has an idea it would really help, Thanks for your time, Merry Christmas

The backmark is VERY FINE ORANGE COLOR (or COLOUR). It's what's called a "quality backmark" and refers to the gilt finish. It likely dates from around 1820-40.

Would be nice if someone else could provide some more information. I have scoured the internet looking for any help but have come up short!

The guy who wore that button could have been the same guy who dropped that 1787 Spanish Reale you found out there too!

I am pretty sure I have found all of his shot mini balls (ha ha)!

Here is the pic of you finding it! Funny, you thought it was just a pewter button in the field. Remember, I said wait until you get home before you clean it. It's so tempting to try and spit shine one.

Have found quite a few of the buttons with an Eagle on the back, along with crowns, feathers and other objects.

Most of those buttons are 1800-1830 era, here is an excerpt from Warren Tice's book Dating Buttons
"Beginning areound 1800, backmarks often included icons such as eagles, feathers, and crowns.

Buttons with backmarks like this are very nice additions to one's collection, I sure do not tire of finding that type, and yes the front side is usually blank.

Hey guys thanks for the help on the ID of this button. We have been working a large field where we think an 1800"s Tavern was located. We have found several pre-civil war round balls and last year just before Christmas I found an 1787 Reale, so this button fits right in to that time frame. We may be getting closer to the Tavern if we find it we'll post our finds. Have a safe and happy new year...Thanks again
