Found a cool button in the woods, it was near what could have been an old house site. There was just a big hole in the ground, maybe a root cellar. I had been working the area, maybe about a quarter mile away was a small civil war camp site. I had found 26 bullets, 2 eagle buttons, and 3 gun wrenches. But this button was all I found in this area. Nice surprise.

Thanks for looking. HH

It is a US Ordnance Dept. button. That Dept. was established in 1812. Your button dates after 1835 or so as that is when the three piece buttons came into fashion. I can't read the backmark but four backmarks are noted. Scoville/Waterbury. U.S. Ordnance Corps, Scovills/Waterbury and another which doesn't seem to be on this button. Can you tell the backmark? It is a hard to get button. It's a staff officer's type.

The backmark is very hard to read. My best guess was Scovills/Waterbury from the letters I could make out. Thanks for the info!

It's a hard to get Union button for sure, however, since they were around before the Civil War a Confederate possibly could have worn it. Very nice find. I don't even remember seeing one for sale since forever.

Very interesting button! I wonder why I often see "crossed" items in emblems? Yesterday I saw crossed swords on a pirate flag in a book, crossed baseball bats on a shirt, and today you have crossed canons...perhaps just for balance....Love it!

That's an awesome button alright!!

I found an Ordinance Corps officers button at a Civil War era site on the west coast, I believe their fairly rare from what I read online.

Congrats!!
