To be good at finding buttons you have to set your discrimination very low, dig all targets above iron, and be in a spot that has buttons to find. A good button hunter hunts in quite a similar style as someone who looks for gold, no matter how small. The sites are very different for those two types of finds, but digging like crazy is something each has in common.
 

Iron Patch is right on with what he said.

I will add that one has to be on a site that is old enough in order to find lots of buttons. During later eras, plastic, synthetic, shell, and other types of non-metallic buttons were more popular--as well as those infamous crappy blazer buttons with iron backs that give trashy junk signals.
