Got permission at a homesite built in 1855 on friday. Found the LC early into the hunt. Sorted it out of the hole with 2 square nails included. The only other two LCs I have found read 11/46-47 5-7 inches deep. This one touched on 11/46 briefly mostly solid 11/45. I was hoping silver dime, it did have a sweet tone. After digging the two square nails out of the hole I re-scanned it at 11/44, then I expected a memorial. It was a nice suprise to pull the LC at only about 4 inches. Later I got a screaming 11/46-47 shollow 1-3 inches expecting a clad quarter that is what I found, 6 of them in the first hole. As I widened out my scan I kept getting quarter signals. In an area about 18 inches in diameter I ended up pulling 16!!! clad quarters The Sterling Silver ring came in about 11/42-43 so I thought wheat, memorial? about 6 inches I dug the ring!! I learned a valuable lesson today. The pictures show it. I gently cleaned the LC with a soft bristle toothbrush and a drop of dish soap.I succeded in washing away 100 years or more of beautiful green patina. It looks terrible now. I will never do this again. I have cleaned green wheats and Indians without scrubbing off the patina. Confused. Now I will research how to go ahead and clean it. Thanks for looking; Bill

How come MY large cents don't come out lookin like that?! Instead, they come out lookin like they've been through (3) world wars, an ice age & the big bang...all rolled into one. Heck of a hunt

Congrats on your silver ring find Bill! :notworthy:

I think your LC looks great! Maybe the "patina" wasn't attached as well as you thought because of the chemical interaction it had in the ground with the 2 square nails? :icon_scratch:

My earliest LC here in Canada is an 1882, I found mixed in with a ton of beer bottle caps! I give all my coppers a hot 5 - 10 minute bath in boiling 20% peroxide by volume and they come out looking great! :D When I found the 1917, I was so excited, I made the mistake of rubbing it when it came out of the hole. :'( With the 1882, I didn't rub it, and used the peroxide method on the remaining organic matter. ;D

I think if you decided to use the "peroxide method" on your LC, I think it might help to balance out the patina . . . but that's just may suggestion! I still think it looks great as is!

Dave

Wow,nice haul!

Nice finds and hunt! I prefer to leave the patina on the coins and relics. HH, Mike

Nice Copper & Silver
I don't 'clean' my coppers much..
It's a crapshoot, sometimes it works well, sometimes it makes you want to cry :'(
