Is this Chineese, Japanese. And is it antique or new age. It belongs to a friend, but I can't find much info on it. Thanks!!!

This piece would date to about the late 19th century in Asia and you can tell it was well used from the bottom of it. This type of craft would normally sell from anywhere $20-$60
