Great article but gold was discovered in 1848 not 1840!

Actually some of the older models did use chain scoops. These were huge machines built on large boats and contained a complete processing plant in the inside of the hulls. I've seen pictures of these types of dredges in some very unlikely locations.

They are called bucket line dredges, some of the fist to be used.
