Hey guys there is this school (public land) that was built in the 1950s. Next to it is where the old school used to stand. It was built in 1911. The school still owns the property. Here's my question- there is a memorial marker on the land constructed by a local organization. Can I detect here? Is it legal since it is still public property? Thanks

it's ok with me

just because a property is a public building does not make it an open target for hunting. Each School District or municipal agency has varying policies as to protect it's properties.

Just because a property is publically funded, and you are a tax payer, it is not an open invitation to hunt.

Your question is best answered by the School District...contact them and get written permission.

Anybody else?

I say contact the school next to it and see what they say.

I say go for it. Just be cool, have a pocketful of trash(to show, if you are approached),
be kind and humble if approached. Don't dig 5 gallon bucket holes, clean up after yourself.
Be respectful. If you are approached by someone(law, citizen, etc.....) kindly let them know, in your area, you are allowed to hunt school grounds, just not while the kids are there. Show them the trash you remove. I would find it hard to believe, anyone would stone you for detecting a school site.
Good luck and hope that helps.

eta: Oh, and AH WOO WOO! Some of ya'll just WAIT! Tom in Ca gonna have a field day! LOL! :laughing7:

The eta. What do you mean?

There is a school near my house even though I wouldn't detect because it is too new. You are aloud to go there but they have signs saying that being their from dusk till dawn is considered trespassing. I would good and just do what some other members were suggesting, have a bag with garbage and say your cleaning up the field. Just be nice and people probably won't care if you are there.

eta = edited to add

It sounds like a killer spot. It was covered in THICK brush until 1996. So hopefully it will be good. I'm going to wait for a few more answers though. Thank y'all for your replies. I believe it's a yes as well but idk. Thanks again

I know but I mean why would he have a field day? Lol
LOL! sorry, LOL! You may need to read some of his posts, LOL! He(much like myself), is among the contention, "WE own this planet"! More or less....... LOL!
Within reason, one should not have to ask permission of public places, that OUR tax dollars, sweat, and blood, have helped to build.

When you start poking the sleeping bear, he will usually wake up and eat you.
If you fish among the poiiticians, they only see risk management issues, and are most assuredly going to give an empathetic NO, to just about any request outside their norms. Best to let the sleeping dogs lie, and do what you gotta do.

Now, why you still oon this computer and not out at that school? :laughing7:
We expect pics!

Go for it what is the worst that happens you get booted.
