Not my find, just trying to help a friend pin down a date. This tiny (~1" wide) solid cast brass crossed cannon insignia was found in Utah in a site that also produced Civil War era GS eagle buttons, underwear buttons, various carbine bullets, and of all things, a darn nice 2nd Corps Corps badge. My friend was hoping that this might have been a site from the 1858 Mormon Expedition, but the Corps badge makes it 1863 or later.
This insignia is, to my knowledge, not an official issue, and is unusual to have the cannon trunnions so evident. No real sign of attachments on the back. I am guessing it may be a militia item, foreign, or private purchase? Also not sure if it might be a hat pin, collar insignia, or maybe even a cape closure. Any help appreciated! Last picture for size comparison.
