Got out to a site with My monster Coil "Big Johnny" to a site that threw out many early Colonial finds:icon_thumright:

Right behind the cellar i got a mixed loud tone..This coil really brings the ground alive..Pounded this area with the 5 inch coil and stock coil but missed this.

1768 Spanish Carolus..Modified:headbang:

Also got a smoked like Cheech and Chong KG Copper..

Silver thimble.

Big Flatty that looks like it could have been repaired in its day..

The usual buttons and a frog that was taking a ride on the coil...He must have been dizzy:laughing7:

Have fun out there:hello:

Some nice scores for sure. I'm with Rick, still waiting for that silver thimble to get under my coil.
HH,

Nice digs JB. Interesting modification on that Spanish silver.

Great finds. Need to get a big coil and get back to some of my hard hit sites.

That's a 1/2 Real right? Odd someone was trying to quarter it--each "bit" would have been 1/8 Real or approx 1-1/2 (1.56) cents.....never seen that before. I've only seen the 8 Reals cut and I have a large cent that was cut in half to make a half cent!

Spanish silver is always great JB! Nice finds.

I like that the silver is pre cut awsome find

Erik yes it is a half Reale..

They may have lost it during the attempt..

What would an 1/8 buy you??

I have never seen a cut one in New England have you?

Thanks Quindy..

What is a watering bit:icon_scratch:

Sorry for the delay in answering your question about the watering bit JB. Creskol (Rob) must be out of town as I sent him a pm. Here is a pic from Howard Crouch's relic book (a great CW relic reference). It states the watering bit was used when the horse is at rest. This makes it easier for the horse to drink and graze versus the high port bit. As I have said many times, I'm not a cw expert but I have friends who are and several reference books. Hope this helps & HH, Q.

Awesome hunt, really like your avatar pic....:occasion14:

Great stuff! Been forever since the rains have let up so we could dig here--and now it looks like we'll have ourselves a hurricane! WORST harvest season ever so far for us! Just hoping to get back out soon...

Best Wishes,

Buck

I've never seen a cut Real dug in our area, just seen them posted here. Although I did dig a cut (in 1/2) large cent in upstate NY last year. An 1/8 Real like I mentioned would have been the equivalent of about 1-1/2 cents, so it would have had some buying power, but those "bits" would have been very hard to not lose! I guess it's possible that someone carved the "Xs" so that it was not mistaken for a thin dime when Spanish coins started coming out of general circulation in the US. It's a cool find regardless!

I found a one reale with a similar cut a few years ago in upstate NY. I always wondered what they were trying to do, especially because it has the marks around the edge.

Now that's an interesting find! Are the score lines in the same position on both sides of the coin? How about your coin JB? One side is obviously missing one score line, but I wonder if the other one matches up. I see another off-center line on both sides that looks like the coin may have been in a vise. Now regaing cut Spanish silver, maybe the southern guys can confirm, but I have only seen the larger coins (8 Real and maybe a 4 Real) cut. I wonder if anyone there has found a 1 or 1/2 Real that was quartered? Not sure what the purpose of that lip would have been.

Unfortunately I'm at school and I dont have it with me. I seem to remember that the lines matched up somewhat closely. Some people thought it was a button-in-making and the score lines were for figuring out where the shank should go. But why would they cut both sides?

Edit: nevermind. I looked through my original post and saw my comment saying the lines didn't match up...

Yes, I doubt it was meant to be a button. Usually when a coin or flat button that lost it's shank was recycled as a button, they would just punch two holes in it with a small square nail. I have a recycled dandy button like that. Someone went through a lot of trouble making that lip on your coin as well.
