Can someone give me the name of the book about chert? My husband & I came across a huge amount of nodules and I'd like to identify them. I believe there is more than one kind there and it doesn't appear to be a vein. It's like geodes but its different colors and patterns of chert. Most are broke open. I did find a nice size agate as well. Thanks!

Put them in the rock forum. Most will say flint or chert but you can always ask if there is another name for them and tell where you found them at...as in the state.
So how big are they? Were they found in water? Check to see if there is any hair line cracks on them from the weather.

The location will be very important to I.D. what formation they are from.
Did they look like this?

You will be much better off posting them here.
They will probably have you scratching it and doing hardness tests.
The rock forum is good for alot of stones..but Flint types and outcrop locations is not one...usually.

Most will be Fort Payne but there will be Buffalo River, Horse Creek, Blueblack, Tennessee Black, Dover and some jaspers.

East Tn Joe also started a thread about different materials not long ago. Might check it out.

I got a cobble the other day. Its kidney shaped. Found quite a few of them on a gravel bar. I only brought one home though.

Unless you have a sentimental attachment to that rock, take another rock and smack the one in your hand on the divot in the upper right corner of the rock as shown in the photo. Hit it right and if its chert you will expose some nice knapping rock. Looks like a good chunk.

I was hoping you might jump in jon. Do you think these are big enough for you to use?

I found a small one that resembles that, I thought it was a chunk of limestone till I hit it and saw dark grey underneath.

Looks like some nice Fort Payne Flint.
GOOD STUFF

Your state should have a Geo. and mineral site that should tell you some of the types of stone in your area or goggle this Tennessee Archaeologist, Vol. xII , no. 1 by Madeline Kneberg 1956 or Selected indian chert types, Ohio Archaeologist, vol. 32, no. 1 by Curtis H. Tomak or my favorite is Story In Stone by D.C. Waldorf.

I was hoping I could post some pix here. This is only a small sample, it's raining a the camera flash is giving a glare. I'm gonna take better pix of the large stuff tomorrow. We found these in a stream off the creek. The water had just about dried out, but still damp and a layer of thin red clay covered most. The outer shell (on most of them) has a sand paper feel, inside is that smooth chert.

I picked this sample up and put it in the canoe. Decide not to keep it because it was plain. My husband broke it open and this is what it looked like inside-beautiful!

Thats a nice uni faced knife you found. Some of that flint has good colors to it. Some of these guys will be sending you a pm or 2 for that stuff.

Here are some more pix of the variety. They are small pieces as I didn't have my backpack to load up.

Real nice stone HB, I beat you have a nice rock garden:thumbsup:

I like to collect small colorful pieces and put them in a glass jar in the house. The bigger pieces are by the pool. This weekend I'm gonna collect a bunch and crack them open. It's kinda like opening a Christmas present, don't know what's inside :)

1st and last pic you have some artifacts. You probably already know that though.

Scrapers in the first one? If so, which ones? Husband found the ones in the last pic. Normally I'm the one finding the good stuff, tables have turned lol.
