Detector(s) used
Minelab EXPLORER SE
We, Vol1266-X and I, went back to our old stand-by Union Camp for the 9th (one day last week) and 10th (today) time. We have found over 200 relics at this site and it still keeps producing. I found a Civil War boot pistol today, plus several pieces of artillery canister shot. I found a piece of rectangular canister shot, which is unusual. I found a couple of fired .58 caliber bullets and one nice dropped .69 caliber bullet. I found parts off a sword hanger, and some other odds and end pieces. The boot pistol was found at about 6 inches deep and produced a strong iron signal. Can someone tell me the best way to clean up the pistol? Thanks for looking.

Boy, I hope it's still not loaded when you throw the 440 volts to it !! Great find.
I want you to hold the pistol in the water when I turn on the 440 volts. That way if there is a problem you can pull it out. ;D

LMAO! :D

That's a GREAT find! I don't know what to tell ya about the cleaning process. I've unfortunately never needed to clean one of those Sweeties up.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

May I ask what detector you use?
I have a hard time finding cannister shots.

I use an Minelab Explorer SE. It really discriminates between iron and other targets. If it is set up right there isn't another detector that will do what it can do as far as depth and discrimination.

wow great finds

Bryce,
I received Andy Sabisch's book. I am going to try your settings for the SE tomorrow, weather permitting. I am going yard coin hunting.

Super finds. Good luck witht the cleaning...

Pretty impressive when cleaned up. How do you use electrolysis to clean up the iron...I have never done this.

Very Nice! Cannot believe you found that many iron Cannister shots in one hunt! Very good job. They sell for about 10 to 15 dollars a piece now so you definitely had a good day with the boot pistol.... :icon_scratch: :-\ TOO BOOT :D ;D

Go to this web site. www.civilwaroutpost.com/34.html It is the best web site that explains electrolysis.

Nice digs!! Can you tell if the cylinder is loaded?? Volts be damn... I'd be worried about putting the amps through it.. seem very, very unlikely.. but if they were metallic casings... ?? I don't know... hate to see then cook off and blow that puppy apart.. I just started using electrolysis to clean some CW era iron... but I don't think I'd go putting anything that has even the slightest chance of being live in a tank... or if i did it would be at the end of a very long extension cord way.. way out in my backyard Then again.. I am paranoid!!! so???
