Civil war "dog tag"

Hi all. The sunshine finally found upstate NY the last couple of days so I got out for some much needed treasure findin ! Theres a cornfield that surrounds an old homesite that dates to the late 1700's right out back of my house.I got permission last year to search the area and found some nice stuff there last summer. I headed out there yesterday morning.I wasn't feeling to great so I wasn't really consentrating on what I was doing but it was nice to soak up some sunshine and fresh air.First thing I found turned out to be a large flat button with all the silver guilt still intact....that one got me going as it looked like a large silver coin at first ! I then continued to wander around and soon got another signal that I thought would be a button. It turned out to be a medalion with a bust of Washington.I couldn't see it that well and at first thought that it may be a counterfeit coin of some sort.I wandered around and found a few more buttons before heading back home to take a break.I got home and cleaned it up and got a better look at it and noticed that there was writing on the obverse side.I posted it in the "what is it " section here and it was id ed as a civil war id tag...thanks again y'all !

The site were I found this has a well known history and this is a very small town so I think I can find out who this belonged to.On the tag the name of the soldier is missing but there are some letters still visible. If I cant find what I need on line I plan on taking it to the local historian and go from there.....but first I'm going back out back ! ;D

Re: Civil war "dog tag"

Nice!!! It is civil war period for sure. It is also pewter and it would be best to do like buckleboy said and coat it with a 50/50 solution or Elmers glue and water. If not treated the pewter will crumble away to nothing.

Re: Civil war "dog tag"

Cool, i didn't even know there was such a thing. Way to go
on the banner.

Yea I Was Hesitant to Banner it as C.W.
because of Washington.

IF I Didn't find one Similar
It still wouldn't be there ;D
I Was thinking fantasy Piece

Congrats on an Awsome Find. :coffee2:

In no way a fantasy piece, even without your good work on rustling up a similar example. Don't worry Jeff--if there was any doubt, we would've voiced our concerns--that is, if the finder had asked if it was genuine or not.

;D

Might not've been a soldier from your area. Could've been someone who moved into your area after the war, or a son or daughter of a CW vet who lost it.

Surefire thing is to start with the payroll records, find the matches there, and then see which of those fits into your area in some way (lived there post-war, descendants moved there, etc.)

Good Luck,

Buckles

Re: Civil war "dog tag"

Thanks y'all.I got back out there today for abit.I rechecked the hole pretty thourly but its a plowed cornfield so I wasn't expecting much.So far none of the letters I can make out match any of the names on my list.....but I dont think the list is complete as it's missing one soldier that I know of.This was a list of soldiers that enlisted in my county....so like BB says there are alot of variables to concider here.I'll be working on it and will let y'all know how it goes.

Edward Kelly's dog tag.

I'm Curious Why G.W.
on a Civil War Tag ?

http://www.bpmlegal.com/76NY/dogtag.html
maby cause he was the president of the time or something, or just cause he was 1st president

At the time we were fast approaching the centennial of the country and people were very patriotic. Heck even today we've had George on our quarter for almost 75 years.
